COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Named after a precious for of quartz indigenous to only Morgan Hill, California, this classic dark ale is smooth and refreshing. Its dark color results from the use of caramel, higher kilned dark crystal and chocolate malt. The beer’s flavor is malty and fruity with a subtle roastiness. To finish Poppy Jasper is generously hopped with Galena, Cascade and Liberty hops for a perfectly balanced wonderfully complex character. Winner of the 1995 California Beer Festival Gold Medal; 1996 Great American Beer Festival Silver Medal.

Pours a clear dark copper with a small off-white head. Light caramel malt and plenty of hops fill the aroma. Body is lightly sweet and full of western hops. Finishes dry and crisp with nice hop flavor. I wouldn't really consider this a brown ale, more of an amber mixed with an IPA.

Bottled. Poured clear medium amber with a moderate cap of off-white head. The aroma picked up sweet caramel, nutty notes, and a little molasses with a touch of earth and vanilla accenting.. quite sweet overall. The flavor found caramel and molasses at the core, with vanilla around.. very little bitterness to note, but perhaps a little oxidation.. tacky finish with a lot of residual sugars. Light-medium bodied and a bit sharp on the palate.. not a great feel.. this was just OK.

Draft. Rich dark amber beer with a nice off-white head. Low fruity/cocoa aroma. Fruity flavor (berry/citrus) with backing darker malts - cocoa and slight roast. Good clean flavor that’s more interesting than most ambers.

Dark amber bronze with a thin tan pad. Sweet caramel, brown sugar and berries in the aroma. Straightforward, but likeable, flavour of nutty caramel with a fruity quality in the finish. Very good.

This orange/copper ale poured with a rich beige head and a toffee aroma. There is also a toffee flavor with enough hop bitterness to keep it balanced. It’s a pretty good amber ale.

Bottle: Carmel in color, moderate to large foamy sandy hued head, very nice lacing.   Soft malt nose, seems to be mildly sweet.   Hop aspect is minor.   Pale malt flavor, very slight cereal and/or cardboard.   Minor enough to where it doesn’t really detract.   Little to no hop presense.   Light, fairly clean, easy on the palate.   I spoze as an English Style Brown thats why its not that agressive or at least assertive.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate.   Does sorta fall off at the finish.   Splains why its fairly clean as not much lingers.   Light, quick to finish, but with some mild malt flavors.   Not bad, certainly worth a try.

On tap @ Northstar, North Beach San Francisco. Pours a rather dirty amber color. Some hop presence, toffee, caramel. Decent amber but really wouldnt need another

Bottle from Bev Mo Fresno. When purchased it was covered with dust so I am assuming it was relatively old. I purchased because I wanted to rate it. It also has Brew 1135 stamped on the bottle. Probably the freshness/dating code. Whatever. Pours a muddy amber color. Aroma is some grass, some roasty caramel malt flavor, and a little sour citrus. Flavor is pretty much malt dominated. Started with a sweet dirt and malt flavor accompanied by metallic notes. As it warmed it became more sweet and toasty. Not bad for how old it probably was. A decent amber. No residual sugars or resiny hops linger. Pretty wattery mouthfeel and body.

clear light orange with a creamy off white head. Faint malt and grain aroma. Slightly sticky palate and a brassy malty taste.
