COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Named after a precious for of quartz indigenous to only Morgan Hill, California, this classic dark ale is smooth and refreshing. Its dark color results from the use of caramel, higher kilned dark crystal and chocolate malt. The beer’s flavor is malty and fruity with a subtle roastiness. To finish Poppy Jasper is generously hopped with Galena, Cascade and Liberty hops for a perfectly balanced wonderfully complex character. Winner of the 1995 California Beer Festival Gold Medal; 1996 Great American Beer Festival Silver Medal.

Poured a lightly hazed golden amber color with an off-white head. Light citrus notes in the aroma mixed with a semi-sweet toffee malt taste. Mild malty flavor with citrus mixed through. Light-medium bodied.

Bottle from IrishBoy. Hazy reddish amber in color. Amazing tan head, huge lacing. Breesia says it looks like a jasper rock. She’s such a smart kid. Sweet malt, slightly rich flavor, with a wonderful rich grapefruity hop finish. This brewery has great things, Thanks again Irishboy!

Draft at Jack’s Bar in the Fisherman’s Wharf area. Small ivory smooth head that was fully lasting, transparent, nice looking lacing, fast-rising carbonation, and a brown hue. Nose was malty, light hop notes, crisp and clean. The flavor was malty lightly hoppy, lightly bitter, crisp and clean tasting Tingly mouthfeel and light-medium body. So-so for the style, but not one that I would go out of my way for.

Thanks to Beerdrenched for sharing this. Pours hazy amber with a light tan head. The aroma has grainy apples - red and green, then malt and no hops. Medium body with moderately sharp carbonation. The taste is very sharp and sour with funky apple junk. The finish was even more sour and just off. I hope this was just a old bottle because it was atrocious.

Thick and cloudy burnt siena with a one finger head that laces a bit. Aroma of citrus, caramel, grassy hops and nuts. Taste of caramel, sweet malt, nuts and some Vienna malt character… kind of like an amtoberfest. Flavors are kind of light with a thick mouth feel and mild bitterness.

UPDATED: DEC 6, 2007 Draft. Clear copper color with off white head that laced the glass. Biscuity malt flavor with a nice flowery hop flavor accented by tangy spices. This one sat for a while and was better warm than cold.

On tap at Rickenbacher’s bar in San Francisco. Pours dark amber with a creamy milky off-white head that is super thick. This was served to me in an ice-cold frozen glass, so it only had a faint hop/berry floral aroma. Thick walls of ringed lacing remain powerfully encircling the walls of the glass like the cartilage of trachea. The beer becomes more aromatic as it warms. Has a rich thick malt body. Has a hearty hop palate with a good tongue bitterness to the finish. Super smooth and easy to quaff. This is way more flavorful than a typical "Amber Ale." Much closer to a hoppy pale ale a la Sierra Nevada. This is the bar with the motorcyles and Tiffany lamps.

Bottle from City Beer in SF. Clear orangish amber color with a small white head. Aroma of bready malt and slight citrusy hops. Flavor is malty with toffee, fruit notes, and a little diacetyl. Would be good if not for that slight off-flavor.

From a 16 oz draft pour at The Local Beer BAr in Eureka, CA. I struggled some with this one. It came in the glass a hazy amber with an off white head. Medium in body. Bland in mouthfeel. The flavor was mostly malts, with some nuts and a hint of citrus. The finish tailed off and there was not much there. Overall, a pretty ordinary effort, and the 16 oz glass seemed pretty big by the time I was finished.
