COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Named after a precious for of quartz indigenous to only Morgan Hill, California, this classic dark ale is smooth and refreshing. Its dark color results from the use of caramel, higher kilned dark crystal and chocolate malt. The beer’s flavor is malty and fruity with a subtle roastiness. To finish Poppy Jasper is generously hopped with Galena, Cascade and Liberty hops for a perfectly balanced wonderfully complex character. Winner of the 1995 California Beer Festival Gold Medal; 1996 Great American Beer Festival Silver Medal.

On tap, Zeitgeist, San Francisco. Dark orange / brown, small tight white head. Slightly sweet aroma. Taste is sweet malt - unbalanced and too much. Over the top amber that doesn’t come off right. Flavour present, just not in a great way. No hops. More drinkable than I made it out to e, I just didn’t really enjoy it.

This score is way too high. Thanks to the wifey for this one. Pours dark brownish with medium sized off-white head. I got caramel malt, brown sugar, slight berry, and slight hops in the nose. The flavor was caramel malty, not sweet, with some brown sugar, and finishing hop notes. Not bad but overrated here.

Slightly darker amber color. Aroma is earth, grain, grass, toast, bread. Medium to light bodied, quite drinkable and clean. Nicely put together, but nothing makes it stand out... but then again it’s an amber so whatever.

Bottled. Poured clear medium amber with a moderate cap of off-white head. The aroma picked up sweet caramel, nutty notes, and a little molasses with a touch of earth and vanilla accenting.. quite sweet overall. The flavor found caramel and molasses at the core, with vanilla around.. very little bitterness to note, but perhaps a little oxidation.. tacky finish with a lot of residual sugars. Light-medium bodied and a bit sharp on the palate.. not a great feel.. this was just OK.

Poured a lightly hazed golden amber color with an off-white head. Light citrus notes in the aroma mixed with a semi-sweet toffee malt taste. Mild malty flavor with citrus mixed through. Light-medium bodied.

12 oz bottle from Bier Stein. Pours light amber with a gigantic fluffy white head and a lot of blotchy lacing. Aroma of caramel, biscuit, very light floral hops. Tasted very thin with caramel, floral hops, biscuit and some astringency. Not a very good beer at all.

Tap. Ours clear deep amber, medium off white head that slowly dissipates with some lacing. Aroma is of caramel, grass, and hay. Flavor is medium sweet caramel, grass, with a light bitter finish.

On tap at the Boom Boom Club S.F. Amber with a short head. Aroma was moderately hoppy, not much going on. Medium bodied and not anything exciting about the flavor. Some lightly raosted malts and a faint toffy flavor is about all.

Bottle courtesy of Irishboy, thanks for one of the many West Coast brews. Pours with a large head in a tulip glass. Aroma is present - all hoppy grassy with orange citrus aspects. Mouthfeel is a bit slimey. Taste is like an expired hop. Low bitterness.

Bottle from Bev Mo Fresno. When purchased it was covered with dust so I am assuming it was relatively old. I purchased because I wanted to rate it. It also has Brew 1135 stamped on the bottle. Probably the freshness/dating code. Whatever. Pours a muddy amber color. Aroma is some grass, some roasty caramel malt flavor, and a little sour citrus. Flavor is pretty much malt dominated. Started with a sweet dirt and malt flavor accompanied by metallic notes. As it warmed it became more sweet and toasty. Not bad for how old it probably was. A decent amber. No residual sugars or resiny hops linger. Pretty wattery mouthfeel and body.
