3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 riversideAK (4566) - Shoreline, USA - OCT 18, 2007
On tap at brewpub. Brew yo 789, brewerd 11/4/2002. Tawny copper color. Aroma of aged sweet candied malt, brown sugar, etc. Somewhat similar aroma to barleywine. Flavor is smooth and sweet with a little bit of bittersweet apple and fruit. My buddy said it tasted like flat Steel Reserve. I thought he was wrong!

From tap at Toronado, Barley Wine Fest 2010. Pours clear and golden deep amber with a small tan head. Aroma is wooden and dry malty. Flat malty and vague fruity flavoured. Light bitterness coming through. A bit ordinary.

Let this warm up to drink. Alcohol hits you first. Taste of dark sugar like molasses with a hoppy kick. Smooth and light body. Coffee flavors. Very nice quality winter brew. Yo ho ho!
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 SamGamgee (2452) - down the whirlpool, California, USA - MAR 28, 2009
Draught at the brewpub. They had two batches of this on; one from 2008 and the other from 2004. I got the 2004 because I just couldn’t pass up the chance. Red-amber color with a small head. Very mellow sweet caramel aroma. Flavors of dried fruit and light spice. Everything is really mellow from the age, and maybe even a bit dull, but it makes a nicely drinkable, smooth presentation. Medium-full bodied. Has held up well, but I could see this being even better fresh.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Ibrew2or3 (4922) - Phoenix, Arizona, USA - FEB 24, 2009
Sampled at Toronado 2009 Barleywine Festival.
Pours hazy copper with thin off white head. The aroma has a bit of a cherry cough syrup sensation then it moves toward figs and a bit of sweet malts. The taste is fruity to start but lacks much in the way of depth or rich dark fruitiness I’d expect for a beer at a Barleywine Fest. Seems pretty darn dry and thin in body from beginning to end.
3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 HopheadHans (794) - Bay Area, California, USA - FEB 19, 2009
Leftover at Toronado from BW fest. One of the hoppier barleywines, a little bit like the deuce, with more of an alcohol burn and somewhat sweeter. Fairly well balanced, with some caramel component in addition to the grapefruit
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 nickd717 (3304) - San Francisco, California, USA - FEB 17, 2009
On tap at Toronado for Barleywine fest ’09. Amber color, off-white head. Aroma of caramel malt and dark fruits. Flavor is sweet and sour with caramel malt, cider, and slight port notes. Some hop bitterness. Fairly full mouthfeel, but not quite as much as others in the style.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20 golubj (1376) - San Mateo, California, USA - FEB 15, 2009
Draft at Toronado BW fest. Darker amber pour. Nice citrus hops, caramel malt, some earthy bittering hops also. Somewhat lighter tasting than the IPA, but I think that it’s just more malt to balance all the hops in that one. Pretty solid.
