3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
1999 vintage shared at cornboys place for the BW tasting. This was not part of the blind tasting, but just thrown in at the end I think? Pours a clear woody deep amber and a thin lasting head and some lacing. Aroma is slightly solvent-like, estery, smooth sweet caramel malts, light oxidation- and peppery with alcohol. Light paint-solvent like oxidation and alcohol character in the flavor upfront, then mellows out and a nice sticky sweet caramel and toffee come in. Still a bit sweet and sticky, but really nice and full and easier to drink than the 2004 we had.

24 year old bottle from 1989 poorly stored. Flat, no lace. Strong malt aroma. Black with red highlights. Roasted barley aroma, cherry, bit medicinal, mostly molasses. Not bad considering age and poor storage, but won?t finish 3 oz serving.

Dusty attractive ’nip’ bottle, 180ml, well presented. Number J14076 of 1979. Exactly 34 years old. Almost seems a shame to open it before its 35th birthday, but I lack patience. Opens with a little fizz. Pours reddy brown with no head forming at all. Can’t even force a head - I’m just getting legs. Smell is potent - sherry and lots of apples. Some marmitey yeast, liquorice allsorts, chocolate sauce, berries. Not a trace of the sourness I was anxious about. Body is medium to full, creamy with a fair bit of carbonation considering the age. Taste is savoury-sweet. More port than sherry, some liquorice, hint of strawberry, some gravy and marmite. No sharpness or sourness thankfully. Very interesting. Every sip is different - sometimes a mouthful of port, sometimes a mouthful of gravy! Rating it is tough because I like a lot of things about it and it’s really good to try it as a one-off, but I wouldn’t be that bothered about trying it again. Not really my style, but I can appreciate it as a good quality beer.

Big and ruby dark ale. Spices and brandy and high ABV well disguised. A little bit on the medicine side. Very very complex and interesting.

Barley wine is not my favorite style. This is a beer that ages well and tastes a bit better when warmer. Most others really like this beer but I was just lukewarm on it.

Okay, my second perfect score. Am I getting lax in my ratings? I don’t know, but I seriously can find nothing to complain or nitpick about with this beer. Maybe it was just the environment in which I had this beer and I had just enough to drink to make this experience mind blowing. 1999 vintage 12 ounce bottle. Super generous share! Pours a dark copper with a creamy, lasting, beige head of foam. In the aroma I get chocolate covered raisins predominantly. Very complex, malt forward beer. Some cherries, caramel, nuts, toffee all come through plain as day. I cannot get over how awesome this beer is. It’s a pit it’s not being made right now. The taste is everything the aroma had to offer, but an explosion of flavor on the tongue instead of just sticking my nose in the snifter. Smooth, creamy mouthfeel. Lasting chocolate covered raisin aftertaste that lingers for a long time, but that still isn’t long enough. I want more of this beer.

Poured an 87, 99, 05-08, aroma of vanilla, fig, caramel. Taste is some dark fruit, caramel and a little fig backing. 1987 was by far the best, 99 was quite off.

4.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
1986 vintage. Pours brown with almost no head. Just a few bubbles. The nose is caramel, nutty and still boozey after 27 years. The taste is heavy sweet, lightly tart and no bitter but fuck! Still drinkable. The texture smooth, soft and creamy. The body is heavy still and finish is long.

250ml bottle from 1995, thanks Ian. Ended up opening this up after it had sat at room temperature for a day and that seemed about right although it still benefit from a slow drink and after about an hour it had opened up beautifully. Plum brown with no head at all. What a nose: an aged malt that has moved past its sweet beginning and changed into more of a port or sherry base, can’t believe I am saying this but some cardboard in a good way, bit of plum, some oak. Warming, semi sweet, very dry on the finish, almost no carbonation yet that’s fine, lots of fruit with complex sherry and port. Wasn’t sure what to expect with this at 18 years but wow, what a beer. Wish I had a case.

3.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 18/20

Bottle 180ml. [1995 vintage]
No carbonation sign at opening. Oops. Pours dark brown with no head. Aroma is of caramel, toffee, sugar, bread, porto, madeira, alcohol. Taste is of caramel, toffee, rotten bread, sweet, mollasses, madeira. Palate: dead flat, sticky, syrupy. Full bodied. Overall: A sipper. Not very good, but complex. Migth be oxydated. I hope I’ll be able to taste another TH by Eldridge Pope, as this beer is amongst my favorite BW.
