4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 TheBeerGod (4131) - Newport News, USA - MAY 30, 2003
UPDATED: NOV 24, 2005 1982 vintage
Had this at Kulminator in Antwerp on 5-14-03 for 6.50 EURO(about $7.00)! Pours deep reddish brown with no head. Aroma is intense. It has an "old" musty funk to it. I also smell rusting metal, hay, slight chocolate and malt. The taste has an almost medicinal like quality but also strong alcohol notes along with a light licorice and peppermint hint as well. Finishes a little harsh with an edge or bite to it. Not as smooth as I would have hoped, but enjoyable nonetheless! However, will rerate per each vintage and average the numbers out.
1983 vintage
Had this at my buddies wedding this evening(10-25-03). WOW! Pours a slightly hazed reddish brown. Has a syrupy sweet nose with molasses and maraschino cherries dominant. The tongue is overwhelmed with flavors ranging from molasses, apples and toffee, to Calvados(apple brandy), Medeira and caramel. The mouthfeel was exquisite. It had a velvety smooth feel with a slightly acidic and dry finish. Magnificent beer!
1995 Vintage
Bottle from the Brickskeller on 11-13-05. I ended up with this as one of my freebies (see my Places review for the info on that). Poured a lifeless murky brown. Nose was rich caramel, chocolate covered cherries and a bit of alcohol. Some oxidation in the nose on this one. Dried apple notes as well. Taste brings forth more chocolate covered cherries, chewy sweet malts, rish caramel and light alcohol. Very tasty! Body is silky smooth but almost flat. It has also thinned a bit, surprisingly. Finishes very sweet with more of the initial flavors from the taste - caramel, chocolate and alcohol with sweet malts. Lighter apple coming through as well as a hint of toffee. Very nice beer!

4.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 radarsock (37) - - MAY 18, 2012
Pours a clear russet-orange into brandy snifter. Hard to detect, but I haphazardly smell oaken soaked alcohol, Candy corn, copper alloy, grass and lemonade. Tastes of Candi sugar with a nice burn and a lingering spicy aftertaste.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Mora2000 (2965) - Dallas, Texas, USA - MAY 1, 2012
This is the 1994 vintage, which was drank in May 2011 in honor of hudsonphotog’s college graduation after all these years (he graduated high school in 1994).
The beer pours a clear, dark brown color with a few white bubbles but no real head. The aroma has a lot of chocolate and raisins, as well as a little bit of soy sauce character and some alcohol. The flavor is a lot more complex. I get a lot of chocolate and oak notes, as well as some rum, raisins and very little alcohol. The beer is very port like. Low carbonation and medium mouthfeel.
I am very happy I got to try this and very happy that it was drank on such a special occasion.
4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20 martinrumsam (236) - BARNSTAPLE, Devon, ENGLAND - APR 11, 2012
1998 33cl bottle . pours an opaque mid brown with no head .light carbonation. aroma is a luscious mix of malt , caramel , christmas cake , faint cinnamon and alcohol . taste follows the aroma - sweet malt , caramel , dark fruit with a nice bittersweet aftertaste like burnt sugar to counteract the overall sweetness a little . a glorious alcohol warmth sets in but is controlled very well for a 12% abv . good body with oily mouthfeel . A classic that ages incredibly well .

1993 bottle. Pours clear tawny with no head. Aroma is lightly oxidized, heavy sherry, caramel, and toffee malt, a dark fruit bouquet of figs, plums, and dates with cookie malt, earthy notes and light alcohol completing this bountiful aroma. Flavor is malt dominant, light spicy alcohol, no hops, the same dark fruit bouquet of dates, figs, and plums with caramel and toffee malt, sherry and a sweet finish. Full body, high warmth, and low carbonation. In the past year, I have enjoyed the 1996 and 1999, and I have to say that the 1993 is holding up better than the other two.
