4.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20 jbertsch (10) - Massachusetts, USA - DEC 27, 2010
Appears black with a light tan head. Frothy and just sticky enough.
Aroma is layered yet simple as everything was subdued a bit. But I did smell roasted malts and faint dark fruits similar to what you’d smell in a belgian quad/trappist.
Taste is a great balance of roasted malts and soft fruit with notes of apple, cherry, dates, grapes... Hops are noticeable, providing complexity. There’s something in the flavor profile for everyone!
Mouthfeel feels nicely carbonated and slightly crisp at first, but quickly changes to a creamy smoothness on the finish.
I couldn’t put this one down...making great drinkability.
This really is a nice cross between a black ipa (or hoppy schwarzbier), and a chimay. There are layers of flavor that don’t at all compete with one another.
I look forward ot buying this again!

Dark brown pour. Not much head. Aroma is sweet, like a barleywine and Black IPA had a baby. Flavor is sweet, medium hops, brown sugar, light citrus, brown sugar. Damn good. Thanks JW77.

Roasty, sweet aroma. Deep brown (porter-like) color with off-white head. Nice strong malt body, moderate sweetness with a nice roasty character. Really a solid clean beer.

love this new local brewery. I didn’t think the "black IPA" style was all that great until I tried this. i just hadn’t tried one yet that really did it right.
dark matter tastes mostly like a really good IPA. more malty than citrusy and with a very fresh hoppiness. the roasted malt flavors complement it well.

Black/brown colour with slight red tinge, tan head and some lacing. Big aromas, very nice! fresh pine cone hops with a real malted or cake note and some licorice. Big IPA character showing hints of burnt wood bitterness and comes off somewhat fruity. very good.

Pours deep mahogany into a Sam glass. Mocha head with good retention recedes leaving sheet lacing to coat surface. Dark caramel and resin aromas. Full and sweet upfront with dark chocolate turning to roasted nuts before the charred resin finish.

Big thanks to big dog kiefdog. Pours mahogany with ruby red edges and nice tan head. The soft aroma is rounded with spicy hops, some roasted malts and earthiness. The taste is an interesting mix with chocolate malts, dark roasted malts, spicy hops and earthiness. Every now and then I get some caramel and sweet malt briefly coming to the surface. Nice easy drinking brew.
