COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Apis IV pours dark brown with hues of orange and red, a thick creamy off-white head, and traditional Belgian lacing. The beer has notes of bread, dark plums, figs, molasses, and honey, balanced by light earthy and floral hop aromas. The beer starts out on the pallet with caramel, honey, dark fruits and a rounded floral bitterness, with spice notes from the Belgian yeast strain we use in this beer brewed in the Trappist Belgian Dark Strong Ale tradition. Look for a medium to heavy mouthfeel with high carbonation and slight alcohol warming. This beer is perfect for cellaring and its complex flavors will mellow out and blend overtime.

(Draught) clear deep copper/plum, cream head. Nose of plum, Belgian yeast, raisin, cream. Taste of old plum, raisin, plastic, finish is a bit sweet, could use a bit more dryness and carbonation.

A very nice quad, though not quite on the level of the best belgian varieties. Nice dark fruit qualities. Tried at the Mayor of Old Town with the parents in 2013.

Bottle. Pours a clear dark red with a large foamy tan head that leaves lacing behind. Aroma of dark fruits (plum, raisins), wood, malt, brown sugar, and some tartness. Taste of brown sugar, wood, tart and sweet dark fruits, honey, malt, and a bit of an alcohol bite. Lingering big dark fruits. Nice!

On tap at Barrels & Bottles. Reddish-brown and cloudy with a tan head. Aroma of dark fruit, sugar, honey, breaded malts, caramel and light alcohol. Similar flavor, heavy sweetness with a touch of floral bitterness. Medium to full body with a smooth creamy feel. Pretty nice.

Confused this with the Cab barrel version, so reentering the correct rating. On tap at Belmont Station A: Dark brown without any head. Great legs, though. Looks better than the cab version. N: Oak, prune, toffee, olives, and soy sauce. Fairly flawed still, but it starts to smell like the ’real’ thing. T: Malty and bready. There’s a lot of dimension to this, and it’s reserved in its sweetness. M: Round and full. Sticky and mealy. O: A fairly decent representation of the style. It’s another American version that doesn’t hit all the right notes, but it’s a good approximation.

Bottle - 750mL corked and caged. Bottle # 05153. Bottled Summer 2012. Dark copper ruby pour with a short, foamy tan head. Strong honey notes in the aroma along with malt, dark bread, soft caramel, toffee and hints of dark fruit. Taste is sweet with a bold honey taste, more dark bread notes, toasted malt, toffee, hints of dark fruit and soft alcohol. Body comes up a bit lacking. Kind of thin on the palate with sparse carbonation. Ends with more honey, soft alcohol, dark bread, toasted grains, malt notes, caramel, chewy toffee and faint fruit.

DLD 2012: Deep purplish brown hue with an okay head, not much lace. The beer has notes of prune and fig, Special B malts for sure along with rye bread and crystal malts, hint of tobacco and chocolate, biscuity and roast as well with a bit of flowery hop too. The mouth feel is sticky and smooth but I also found this a tad boozy. Overall I nice quad and drinkable.
