COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
First Cast pours a hazy gold, with soft orange hues and white fluffy head that sits on its peak like the snow on the 14,000-foot mountains that are the backdrop to our microbrewery. Aromas of grapefruit, pine, and citrus hops as well as hints of caramel and fresh bread from our locally grown malt invade the senses. The beer hits with a smooth hop bitterness that tingles across the tongue with a lingering bite of mountain pine, grapefruit and fresh citrus notes. This beer is designed as an everyday brew for the craft beer aficionado, with a medium body and a high carbonation to refresh the palate.

6/27/2015: Grabbed a bottle of this to enjoy at the park while watching the rafters before heading over to the airport... To be honest, this bottle wasn’t particularly fresh given that the label had a date stamp of Oct 2014, but so be it.. Drank it from an insulated stainless steel bottle, but the beer looked to be a nice golden color when I was pouring it in at the car. This drank more like an English style IPA, but had a lot more bite. I probably say that since the hops were degraded and more of the bready and biscuit maltiness was coming through. The hop flavors were herbal and spicy with some grass and pine. The bitterness level was okay, but it seemed a bit raw and therefore it didn’t have a very good aftertaste of overly pleasing lingering bitterness. Medium body, well-carbonated. Decent enough, but definitely far from prime or the best beer that we had on the trip. Good bye CO, we’ll miss you! :(

Bottle - average gold with a large bubbly head and lacing. Earthy hops but the malts stand out in this one. Lots of bread and biscuit notes. Pine, grass, etc. Medium body. Low bitterness.

[On tap after the Grin and Bear it, Crested Butte] Amber color with a small, off white head that left light lacing on the glass. Aroma of citrus, pine, floral hops, toffee malts. Taste of citrus, pine, grass, bitter finish.

Ernest (6727) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - JUN 27, 2015
Bottle. Head is initially small, frothy, white, mostly diminishing. Body is dark yellow. Aroma is lightly malty (caramel), moderately hoppy (grapefruit, apricot), with light notes of diacetyl, cooked fruit, plastic. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, moderately bitter, slightly unclean. Medium body, syrupy/watery texture, lively carbonation, lightly astringent, lightly alcoholic. A little bit below average...syrupy sweet with an unwanted sourness, and the aroma has some problems of its own. Not enjoyable, but just barely drinkable.

Sampled on 6/22/15. This IPA pours a slightly cloudy amber gold color from a 12oz bottle. Small to medium sized white foamy head. The aroma is fruity and sweet, a touch bready. A medium bodied IPA. The malts are fruity and sweet with some bread. The hops are citrusy and pine. Decent carbonation. It does seem a little sweet and the hops are somewhat subdued for an American IPA, but still very drinkable. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and crisp. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

Bottle. Caramel malt aroma with notes of pine and citrus hops. Pours golden colored with a moderate white head with good retention and some lacing. Starts with good caramel sweetness as well as some grapefruity citrus. Finishes very smooth for an IPA with only a hint of dryness and mild pine and citrus hops. Smooth, refreshing IPA.

Sweet (corn) and "beery" nose. Creamy texture; lacks some snap and crispness. Light caramel in the malts. OK balance but hop flavors and aromas were subdued. OK but underwhelming.

This is a good, moderately hoppy IPA that is moderately malty as well. It is not on the heavy, extra malty or extra hoppy spectrum but is well balanced and very satisfying after a long day treking through the snow with my wifie and our pooches!
