Much like the "sweet light crude oil" from the eastern plains of Colorado this beer pours a deep black with a tantalizing off-white head. Aromatics of sweet malt and bourbon envelope the nose like the sunset of the eastern plains. The malt profile continues through the palate from beginning to end with subtle hints of chocolate, coffee, and of course bourbon. This is a true beer for the malt and bourbon lovers alike.

Appearance: Splashes out a very dark brown, near black body in color, with a medium-sized, dark tan-hued head.

Smell: Chocolate-glazed roasted malts coated in meager hints of dark fruits, vanilla sugar, brown sugar, spent coffee grinds and barrel wood.

Taste: A heavy, lush chocolate and roast component in the fore with more than enough sweetness to back it up. Flush of alcohol warmth. Slight vinous dark fruitiness, a little drizzle of soy. Though not dominating the flavor, the barrel accents are evident. Subtle hop character and bitterness. The choco-roast sustains through the finish as it seems to pick up even more alcoholic heat.

Mouthfeel: Medium-full body. Medium-low carbonation.

Overall: For me, it falls short of great, but it’s certainly still a worthwhile, solid BA-RIS.

2012 Vintage - pitch black with mocha head. Roast bomb throughout which some bitter chocolate and a touch of coffee. Pretty unsweet. Barrel is pretty absent with the exception of some char notes. Many better options out there. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Sampled at DLD 2013. Black with a thin beige head. Aroma is very malty - chocolate, bourbon, roast, vanilla. Flavor has notes of caramel and molasses as well. Finish is burnt caramel and roast. Thin for the style.

Pours dark black with tan head. Smell is chocolate and lightly bourbon like. Taste is rich malt. Chocolate. Medium carbonation. Kind of middle of the road for bourbon barrel stouts.

Tap at Jake’s. Clear dark, dark brown, a little red with a tan head that laces but does not last. Oily. Aromas of bourbon, dark fruit, raisins, plum, malt and molassess. Flavor is the same with some light grape notes. Full bodied lingering sweet malt and fruit.

750ml bottle shared by MadBeerBaron. 2012 vintage, with a little over a year on it. Brown-black body, Soapy head. Big bourbon chocolate aroma. Deep barrel tones. Pretty nice, some red fruit, coffee. Gets boozier as it warms. Pretty solid, but the booze and age steal a little of the malt tones, I’d guess.

11 oct 2013, bottle 02058. Aged in Breckinridge bourbon barrels. Black. Nose is faintly sour, like been too long in bourbon barrels. Med full body, slightly fizzy. Serious dark chocolate stout, big alcohol. Awesome ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
