Much like the "sweet light crude oil" from the eastern plains of Colorado this beer pours a deep black with a tantalizing off-white head. Aromatics of sweet malt and bourbon envelope the nose like the sunset of the eastern plains. The malt profile continues through the palate from beginning to end with subtle hints of chocolate, coffee, and of course bourbon. This is a true beer for the malt and bourbon lovers alike.

Draft: Poured pitch black with tan head. This had strong boozy aroma with vanilla. Taste is sweet sticky boozy bourbon.

Bottle thanks to Will. Pours a dark brown with small beige head. The aroma is booze and caramel malt. Medium mouth, dark chocolate, light roast, strong bourbon, very good.

A little hot like I like it. Bourbon, vanilla, wood & cocoa. Heavy malt but balanced with alcohol enough to make this very enjoyable. Tasted at 55F.

750 caged and corked. Very dark brown pour. Chocolate nose with some booze. Wood flavors, bitter chocolate. Bourbon and vanilla in the background. Little bit of acetone in the finish. Some heat also in the finish. Ok but I wouldn’t get it again.

Pours black like oil with the same viscosity and dark tan head. Bourbon, big on the nose, with just a little vanilla and cocoa, some oak; follows onto the palate. Finishes with more bourbon.

Pours a very dark brown with a dark burnt caramel head. Smooth, blended, thick, syrupy aromas of smoky grease, a little alcohol. Thick and smooth. Date and griddle grease flavors.

Appearance: Splashes out a very dark brown, near black body in color, with a medium-sized, dark tan-hued head.

Smell: Chocolate-glazed roasted malts coated in meager hints of dark fruits, vanilla sugar, brown sugar, spent coffee grinds and barrel wood.

Taste: A heavy, lush chocolate and roast component in the fore with more than enough sweetness to back it up. Flush of alcohol warmth. Slight vinous dark fruitiness, a little drizzle of soy. Though not dominating the flavor, the barrel accents are evident. Subtle hop character and bitterness. The choco-roast sustains through the finish as it seems to pick up even more alcoholic heat.

Mouthfeel: Medium-full body. Medium-low carbonation.

Overall: For me, it falls short of great, but it’s certainly still a worthwhile, solid BA-RIS.
