4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20 JDBaker11058 (922) - Maryland, USA - APR 27, 2013
Appearance: dark brown with rusty highlights, one finger of creamy tan head, average lacing. Aroma: smoky, obviously, with notes of caramel, pumpernickel, gingerbread, toffee, and leather. Taste: slightly sweet, with caramel, toffee, and toast, with spicy hops and a full thread of smoked meat underneath. Finish: clean, spicy, and smoky, with slight lasting sweetness. Notes: The smoke on this was more meaty and less camp fire-y, which is a winner in my book. Excellent body, with the smoked malts playing a supporting role to well-balanced sweet and spicy characteristics. Clean and fresh palate. Bottle from the Rare Beer Club, and my 900th beer rated. Glad it was a good one for this milestone.

Pour on tap at the Denver Rare Beer Tasting 2012, dark black pour with creamy tan head, aroma brought notes of smoked malts with some campfire, bacon type notes, some chocolate, coffee, roast, hints of dark molasses and slight dark fruits in there as well. Taste is very smoky, with campfire, roasted meat notes, hints of coffee, chocolate, espresso in there, slight spice, earth and dark fruit notes, finishing fairly bitter. Pretty nice.

Bottle shared by a friend. Clear reddish copper pour with a medium tan head. Malty and caramelly nose with some booze and a lot of firewood smoke. Caramel and ham flavor with some toffee character before a hammy finish.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 JCB (3804) - Durham, North Carolina, USA - OCT 21, 2012
750ml from the Rare Beer Club. Nice medium amber pour with a fairly minimal carbonation but a healthy gleam to the beer. Nose of soft smoked malts and a bit of cured meat sweetness. Strong malty lager base is quite nice, going especially well with some heavily treated ribs, and the smoke tends to come on rather strong in the finish. Fairly complex and well balanced, but not overpowering, this would be a good beer for your friends who are wary about rauch. And this: FUCK CANCER.
