3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
750 ml. corked and caged bottle, number 01541. Pours a thin, poor retained light beige head over a clear, dark brown (SRM 30) body.....nose is light coffee, heavier milk chocolate, vanilla.....taste is sweet chocolate, sweet coffee, vanilla, leading to a sweet but slightly bitter roasted malt and hop finish.....mouth feel light of medium, sticky, mildly astringent, alcohol hidden, carbonation low, with a mild acid finish. The beer is what the brewery was aiming for, but as it has aged the sweetness, partially mitigated by the roasted malts and hops, has become quite dominant. As such it does not have the complexity in aroma and flavor of more interesting beers, but some beers age better than others. Perhaps this should be consumed fresh for fullest enjoyment. It is technically flawless. BJCP 7/3/13/4/7

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
A pretty mild beer. The sweet malts, caramel, cocoa, and cinnamon are there but not pungeant. Decent.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Thanks, Jeff. Horchata rules and so do imperial porters. CLICK! Sludgy chocolate pour, almost like that ooze when you get to the bottom of chocolate milk. Nose of light bourbon, a dusting of chipotle and cinnamon, and rich chocolate malts dominating. Body is nicely rich but not overpoweringly sludgy, and there’s just a touch of heat on the palate. Finish is surprisingly dry, owing to bitter chocolate notes, continued spice, and enough hop additions for balance in what might otherwise be a one-dimensional beer. Enjoyed it!

750 ml. bottle from a beer club membership. Pours almost black with a tan head. Some sweetness on the nose blended with the roasted malts. I did not detect any cinnamon which is great. Light hoppy finish. Good one.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle from a trader in Colorado, cola in color and tan head. Aroma is some vanilla and malt, rather weak. Taste is a bit of vanilla and chocolate, light cinnamon spice, quite a let down.

2.2 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 6/20
At Avery Strong Ale Fest 2013--black hued pour with a thin cap head. Funky dark malty aroma that doesn’t come together really well. Nose kinda has some deep roastiness with some plastic chemical tone, soy sauce, and earthy hops. Flavor is roasty and dark, almost sweet if not for the almost immediate drying roast and burnt toast flavor, with an earthy hop bitterness and something chemical I can’t put my finger on.

Dark brown with a white head. Aroma and flavor is roasted with sweet notes of chocolate, vanilla and cinnamon. Medium body with a smoky finish. Not as sweet as I expected, but still pretty tasty.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Head is initially average sized, frothy, brown, mostly diminishing.
Body is dark brown to black.
Aroma is moderately malty (chocolate / cocoa powder, roasted grain), lightly hoppy (flowers), with a note of vanilla.
Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter.
Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter.
Medium to full body, watery/creamy texture, lively/soft carbonation, lightly to moderately alcoholic.
A very simple beer, but thankfully without off notes. The aroma is almost nothing but chocolate and vanilla, with only minor roast and hops. Can’t detect the cinnamon at all (don’t expect a "holiday spice beer" sort of nose, the spice is virtually non-existent). The lactose likely contributes to the flavor balance being too sweet, but it’s still drinkable, not goopy-syrupy-cloying. All in all it’s an ok rendition, but not worth its somewhat steep price tag.
