Elevation’s first barrel aged beer is made in the tradition of the farmhouse beers of the Wallonia region of Belgium. Eclectic, funky, and original this is the first beer in our Double Black Diamond Series of seasonal barrel-aged beers. The Signal de Botrange is the highest tower on the highest point in Belgium and we hope our Signal de Botrange will help elevate your perception of beer, much like the beers of Belgium did for us.

On tap poured a clear red hue w/ quickly diminishing head. Moderate aroma of chardonnay and oak. Initial flavor light sweet with almost no noticeable sour in the finish. Very light belgian yeast and only a hint of funk the flavor of the chardonnay barrel is the focus of this beer. Light bodied, watery texture, soft carbonation. Drinks like a wine cooler, without a noticeable dryness this 7.5% will sneak up on you.

Golden orange in color with a white head. Sweet malt nose of bread and hints of caramel. Some wine and oak, a touch of pear, light apple, and grape. There’s a light funk to the flavor, but still somewhat sweet and fruity. Pear, apple, grape, and perhaps some golden raisin. Bread, mild caramel, wine, oak, and a very slight tartness.

DLD 2012: Hazy coppery hue with a nice lasting head. Has notes of grassy and slight herbal hops, moderate white wine and oak, some nice farmhouse notes with just a touch of funk and earthiness. Very refreshing mouth feel and lightly dry woody finish. I really liked this and was happy it was not some sour’d bomb or over hopped version of the style.

Bottle - 750mL corked and caged. Bottle # 02898 from Summer 2012. Pours a hazy amber with a tall, foamy tan head. Aroma is woody and wine-like with earthy notes, yeast, grains and ripe fruits. Taste is wood, earthy notes, yeast, fermented fruits, grape skins, wine notes, sweet malt, toasted grains and caramel. Body is medium with a moderate, bubbly carbonation and light stickiness. Oak barrels more pronounced during the finish and there’s a touch of coconut as a results. Add more yeast, ripe fruits, earthy notes, straw, toasted grains, caramel, and wine. Nice beer! Based on it being almost a year old, this has aged well!

750 ml. bottle from a beer club membership. Pours copper with a white head. Floral and grassy notes mixed with the funky aroma from the yeast. The barrel aging adds a bit of structure and complexity.

Pours a hazy copper-orange with a finger of fine light tan head. Settles in minutes with minimal lacing. Aroma is mild, slightly funky, hay/wheat/bread, floral, hints of fruit, apple, pear, wine, and oak. Flavor is tart apple, pear, wheat, hay up front, building slightly. Fades into bitter grain, mild malt, wheat and oak and alcohol tones. Soft to moderate carbonation and medium body, smooth, slightly watery and acidic mouthfeel. Slightly bitter, alcoholic finish. Not as funky as I’d hoped but a solid beer.

UPDATED: MAR 10, 2013 A mild but tasty Belgian ale. Reddish brown, cloudy with a white head. Fruity, slightly sour, and a bit sweet. Doesn’t taste as alcoholic (7.5%) as it is.

Thanks for sharing, Jeff! Nice deep orange pour, with tight, crisp carbonation and spotty lacing. Aroma struck me immediately as make or break in its potent, resonant combo of buttery Chard (West Coast, no?) and healthy yeast. Make for me, thankfully, even though that’s not how I enjoy my Chardonnay. Light spice gives the mouthfeel a bit of a tang, and it’s the kind of thing that comes through even more in the taste. Mouthfeel not quite as substantial as desired, but still robust. Flavors are fruity, biere de garde like the Jolly Pumpkin IO, combined with saison spice and the oak/wine combo. Pretty nice.
