3.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 JaBier (3249) - Capital City, Ohio, USA - JAN 16, 2010
Had this one a couple years ago (before I started rating) as part of the MBA program and was really let down by the flavor after the aroma was so good. Thought they righted the ship when I had it again at the Barley’s Mini RAF this past year, but found out it was their BA Imperial Porter and a different beer altogether. Here we go with try #2 for this beer. Dark brown pour with a thin beige head. Bourbony vanilla nose that doesn’t kill everything else; chocolate and roast are still very much present. Flavor...’sigh’...is of vanilla cream soda, almost cola-ish. No chocolate, no roast, no burn. Still a very wimpy flavor and a letdown after such a good aroma.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 Dogbrick (4842) - Columbus, Ohio, USA - SEP 17, 2009
Sample at the North Market Microbrew Festival on 09/12/2009. The beer pours black with a medium light brown head that disappears quickly. Spotty lacing on the glass. Bourbon aroma with notes of malt and coffee. Full body with flavors of oak, malt, dark fruit and mild coffee. The finish is oaky bourbon and a dark malt flavor that lingers. Pretty good overall.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 minch25 (564) - Medford, Massachusetts, USA - APR 21, 2009
Dark brown; thick collapsing beige head. Aroma, flavor, lots of bourbon barrel. The bourbon sweetness is the main attraction. Medium bodied, almost creamy, relatively low bitterness. While a little one-dimensional and not close to their BA barley wine, this is still very good.
4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20 1010 (310) - Marysville, Ohio, USA - APR 16, 2009
Pours a deep black with a nice tan head. Great tasting porter with a high ABV
pint draft as part of their MBA program
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 Glouglouburp (4783) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - MAY 16, 2008
UPDATED: MAY 19, 2008 Part of their “Monthly Real Beer Selection”, one off-the beaten path special beer every month
In short: A smooth dangerously drinkable woody (bourbon) porter. Excellent.
How: Tap at brewpub
The look: Dark brown body with a medium beige head.
In long: This is the April beer of their 12 “Monthly Real Beer Selection”. The barrel is very apparent in this one. I’d say Bourbon barrel. This is a very woody beer. Dark malts, medium roastiness, black cherries, oak, more wood. Creamy body. A little wilderness in the barrel profile reminded me of some of the Captain Lawrence barrel aged beers (and that’s quite a compliment). Amazingly smooth despite the extra-high abv. I cannot imagine many ratebeerians not liking this beer. And since almost none will get a chance to taste it I’m probably right with my prediction.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Rogueone (506) - I F&ckin’ hate those guys from, Ohio, USA - MAY 1, 2008
This is a one-time monthly offering that may return to replace the Coal Porter due to popularity. Sampler @ Brewpub. Pours a deep ruby-brown. White lacing around edge of the glass. Aroma of oak and a medium-strong earthy bourbon nose. A little unbalanced, bourbon flavor drowns out many of the other notes of this beer, but tastes like flat cola and bourbon. A bit thin. Overall, not bad.
