MAP (1133) - Lakewood, USA - APR 4, 2010
Bottle purchased at Palmer’s on Indianola on my way to the Newport on 4-3-10 for the Clutch show. Left the store with quite a haul (including 2 fours of Cerberus for my wife). So. There are foam issues. Not to the point that it is coating my ceiling, but its enough to actually delay the beer drinking. Poured roughly half a glass of liquid and its topped off thanks to the foam. Hours later: well, the foam has subsided and a fluid is left in the glass. Aroma is a slightly metallic caramel malt. Flavor is crisp, but not from hops, more metallic. This just kind of falls flat. Rather disappointing.

Copper color beer with a thin off wbite head. Big sweet hop candy nose. Candied grapefruit and resin tastes with candi sugar, burnt caramel and some wet cardboard flavors. Seems a little thin and the alcohol seems hidden. Lots of flavor but seems a bit disjointed.

11th anniversary, 11% abv. Pours and looks like a barleywine, yeast, toffee and hops in the aroma, and some sort of fruitiness also.good sweet taste, not overwhelming. Toffee and nutty malt flavors, some dark fruit, and a nice bitter finish. Thick syrupy mouthfeel, good brew. I still say this seems to be a barleywine more so than an imperial red.

750 ml bottle, II/11 years Edition, 11% ABV. Served in a nonic pint glass, the beer pours a hazy amber/red color with about an inch light tan head. The head retention is excellent, and there’s a good amount of lacing left on the glass. Aroma is caramel and bready malt, pine and citrusy hops, toffee, and some dark fruit. The hops in the aroma fade not long after the pour, and then the malty aromas take over. The brew tastes like caramel malt, pine and leafy hops, toffee, dark fruit and a little bit of apples. Good balance between the hoppy and malty flavors. There’s also a lingering bittersweet finish. Mouthfeel/body is medium/full, it’s creamy and a bit coating with good carbonation. I think it’s a good brew, I enjoyed it.

On tap at brewpub
I was stunned when the bill came for this and it was $7.50. While this was a solid beer it was definitely not worth the sticker shock that followed. I can cross Elevator Brewing off of the list of places to visit next time I am in the Columbus area. Focusing on the beer itself it was a competently made but rather unexceptional imperial red. At half that price I might have ordered another.

Aroma / Appearance - The thick heavy amber body was very dark, dense, and intimidating. Bubbly white head floated around the edges. Pureed cherries, maple syrup, vinous notes, and a medicinal tinge were a combination of good and bad. Subtract the cough syrup aspect and this becomes immediately much more robust.

Flavor / Palate - Dry and hoppy at the start it eases into a full presence a few sips later. Caramel, malt balls, and dark fruits settle on the throat. The bitterness also comes with time until it takes over the whole stage. Overall I was fairly impressed with the beer itself but the price tag knocks it down a notch. This should have cost no more than $6.00 at worst.

Dogbrick (4842) - Columbus, Ohio, USA - SEP 7, 2010
UPDATED: OCT 25, 2010 Sample from a bottle at the Day Before Labor Day party. Pours a mostly clear deep orange-amber color with a thick and foamy white head that dissipates slowly. Sticky rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of citrus, hops and malt. Medium body with a citrusy hops character and notes of sweet caramel malt and fruit. The finish is hoppy with a lingering fruit aftertaste. Decent overall.

Thanks to AmericanBrew for sharing this at a recent tasting. The beer pours an orange-yellow color with a white head. The aroma is caramel malt, alcohol and a lot of different citrus flavors such as oranges and peaches. The flavor is more citrus fruits with some toffee malt, alcohol, brown sugar and some hops. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.
