COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Pasteurised bottle. Also available on keg as Old Smoothie Mild.
NOTE: Ratings for the cask version should not be posted here; it has a separate listing.
A traditional dark mild at 3.6% abv. The beer is well balanced with a full roast flavour. The use of Crystal malt and Roast Barley give a deep underlying characteristic flavour, which is balanced with Fuggles hops as the sole variety.

Bottle@Proeflokaal. Malty and light roasted aroma. Very dark brown color, beige head, good lace. Light malty, light roasted, hints of laurel and burnt twigs. Bit watery but what do you expect with only 3.6% ABV.

Dec, 2002 From this fifth generation family owned East Anglian small brewery comes this award winning traditional dark mild. A good woody nose with a hint of dark fruits, and a wonderfully smooth but full flavoured palate with a gentle sweetness to offset the roasty, nutty flavours, and a zippy touch of iced lemon tea to clean the mouth. A very refreshing and fulsome brew. [3.0]

Rummaging in the BHS selection bucket again. Nose roasted but sweetly chocolatey, with vanilla and oak aplenty. Virtually pitch and heaped with beige froth. Faint bonfire and coffee smokiness, grain and tobacco. Aftertaste sweet, lingering, mealy and milky, but I like it. Characterful, stouty, schwarzbier-like mild of the kind you could drink by the bucketload all evening without falling over.

Nice deep dark murky opaque ruby brown. Beige head which disspiates and laces after minute. Malty bready, caramel biscuit aroma. Sticky palate indeed. Nice mild.

Bottled, 500ml, pasteurised, from Tesco, Banbury. Dark brown with tan head. Initial fizz which is really odd for a mild, cardboardy CO2 flavour. After settling down there is a little fruitiness with a roasted nut note too, but everything is a little thin and tired. I certainly prefer the cask.

A Mes rate: Bottle from Tesco. Black body with a swiftly vanishing head. Bland sweet malt aroma with some faint coffee. Malty flavour , clearly pasturised. Slight metallic notes. Bitter coffee finish. Sticky palate. Not great.

Enjoyed this more than the cask version, which I rated recently. Very dark brown with an off white head. Faint malt aroma. First taste is black toffee malt, sweet like a toffee apple. This is followed by refreshing sourness and a nice bitter finish. Went down well after lawnmowing.

UPDATED: SEP 1, 2007 cask @ jdw, borough. Roasted malts and nuts in the nose. Tastes of coffee and roasted malts with some dark chocolate bitterness. Finish of coffee frappe. Good, but far too thin and muted.
