Commercial Description:
Cask; Regular.
NOTE: Only ratings for the cask version should be posted here. The pasteurised bottle version is listed separately.
A traditional dark mild at 3.6% abv. It has many CAMRA awards to its name and is a well known brand in the free trade. The beer is well balanced with a full roast flavour. The use of Crystal malt and Roast Barley give a deep underlying characteristic flavour, which is balanced with Fuggles hops as the sole variety.

Cask (Carlton Arms, Cambridge)
Dark, almost black, no head (gravity). Taste is a wonderful slightly smokey roastiness, hints of bacon. Pleasant malty finish with a subtle bitterness, and a lingering sweet burnt malt.
Re-rate. Prior rating: (6-5-7-4-13=3.5) (Gallows Bird, Espoo, Real Ale Festival 2007).
Quite full-bodied for a mild, noticable bitterness accompanies the richly roasted butterscotchy maltiness.

Cask at Kent Beer Festival, Canterbury: Good example of a mild, aroma of roasted malt and this follws through in the flavour, with a little carmale thrown in there as well. Pretty good stuff.

Half pint, cask version hand pulled at Dove Street Inn, Ipswich. See-through, dark brown body with only some dimples at the surface. Toffee-like aroma. The flavour is dominated by soft caramel sweetness offset by hints of apples. Flat palate, but still a rather well made Mild ale (04.05.2008).

Cask - Fat Cat, Norwich. Dark brown in colour with a quickly dissappearing head. Roasted malt aromas with some hops available as long as they are searched for. Delicate flavours that are predominantly, similar to the aroma, of a roasted malt quality. A subtle bitterness and a smooth palate finish this nicely, if not exceptionally.

Cask, Far From the Madding Crowd, Oxford. By way of Witney, on the way to Woodstock. (Getting on the wrong bus home is not the most straightforward reason to have a pub crawl, but it works alright.) Dark brown, fine dark tan head. Nose of chocolate, pennies, and wet grass. A nice level of roast in the flavor, but an odd iodine component. A bit of swamp water. Some good things here. Nice mouthfeel for the strength and a good flavor volume.
