Cask; Regular
A strong bitter with a rich brown colour and a strength of 5.2% abv. The full flavour is derived from the recipe of Pale Ale Malt, Torrefied Wheat, Invert Sugar and Roast Barley. The hop blend is from finest English Fuggles and Challenger. The rich raisin character is a result of the fermenttaion of the dark sugars from the Invert sugar & Roast Barley. A palate fullness is another characteristic of this beer.

Cask (gravity) at Olde Dolphin (Derby)Heavyweight Beer Festival 2005. Deep copper, strong and sweet malts, short dry finish, solid stuff if rather unremarkable.

Darkish looking still beer with a very malty aroma and very malty flavour that is slightly dry. Overall a good malty beer.

Cask@Bedford BF. Appleskin and toffee. Grainy. Not too much else going on, fairly short finish, and slightly dull mouthfeel.

Copper colour, with (like the Elgood Barleymead also sampled at the same time) some rather off-putting cereal notes upfront in the aroma. After that, it settles down into a fruity and nutty strong bitter - clean and fairly dry. Overall, solid, but unspectacular. Cask (gravity dispense), Bedford Beer Festival 2004.

UPDATED: SEP 19, 2010 Cask conditioned - Gravity Dispense - Bedford Beer Festival. Just shows how funny this beer tasting thing is. I’ve had this beer plenty of times in the past and noticed good caramel flavours which Joeh notes in his rating. This was the same glass and I got none of that! Instead I found the taste a bit thick fruity and cloying. The aroma also had lots of fruity malt notes. Dark brown coloured. Score 2.8
Subsequent rating scored 3.7. Average becomes 3.2

Nice amber color, small offwhite head. Not much aroma at all, maybe some malts and a little sweetness. A little thin, and the flavor is a little weak as well. There are better bitters...

Deeply coloured amber body with a fine beige head. Sweet malt and maple syrup aromas. Flavour is initially sweet but then develops into a strong bitter of a relatively long period. OK, but not remarkable. If your in that sort of market, try Old Bob (Riddleys), ESB (Fullers) or Old Hooky (Hook Norton), all three are quality drops.

(Hand Pump) A chesnut coloured beer with a small light tan head. A very rich and full aroma that is supported by the almost viscous presence in the mouth. This quickly turns to an almost metallic twang on the palate. Not for me this one.
