<o> Cask Fresh @ Jdw's Watch House, Lewisham. I was expecting a Golden Ale with a name like that, but it turns up a murkey brown colour and with an assertive dark malt and earthy hop flavour. This does show off English hops to best effect, quite an explosion of tingly, down right dirty hop bitterness grinding on and on. The juicy fruits up front are soon over whelmed by the hops. Damn good.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 EdKing (937) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - APR 21, 2011
Dark beer with ruby colouration. Nose is Bakewell tart, caramel. Taste is caramel, coffee, roasted nutty flavours giving way to floral English hops and bitter finish. Good Winter Ale.
3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 FatPhil (6207) - Tallinn, ESTONIA - FEB 9, 2011
Cask (Market Porter, London)
6 Sweet toffee caramel on the first sniff, touch of red berries, and almost a cakey aroma later.
4 Mid-red-orange, persistent ring head.
7 Retronasals quite toffee-ey, some light fruit and fleshy fruit nectar, hints at pungent hops. Taste well balance sweet rich malts, and fruity too.
4 Quite full in the mouth, soft carbonation. Sweet treacly cakey finish, and lovely dry leafy hops take over for the long finish.
13 Super solid sweetish bitter. Great non-strong winter warmer.

Cask at a Wetherspoons in Manchester. A nut-brown beer with a thin tan head. The aroma has notes of malt, caramel, and nuts. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt and nuts as well as light notes of metal. Nice.

UPDATED: JAN 11, 2012 Cask conditioned handpump Wootton WMC. A dark chestnut coloured beer with an off white head. The aroma has hints of tiredness with some fruit skin notes. There is better signs to the flavour though which is malty and there are coffee notes. Fruit then comes through and there’s a fair amount of bitterness. A nice taste, shame about the nose. Score 3.0 Subsequent rating scored 3.3. Average becomes 3.1

[Cask at the Back of Beyond (JDW), Reading.] Chestnut with a loose cream head; caramel malt aroma; malty flavour with some roast nuts and well balanced bitterness, and a long hoppy finish.

Handpulled cask at JDW Hatch End Harrow. Dark copper with off white head. Good pure tasting toffee malt with a late gentle hop finish. More of a winter ale to me rather than a premium bitter. Very nice.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Mungo (2472) - Southampton, Hampshire, ENGLAND - MAR 26, 2008
Cask conditioned @ Humble Plumb, Soton. Toffeish malts well balanced with earthy leafy hops. Some nutty toasty hints linger. Reasonably bitter finish prevents this from being to sweet. Whilst this wasnt bad I’m not always especially keen on the maltiers ’bitters’ this one was lifted above the ordinary by the hop element.

Cask handpull at Market Porter, London. Ruby with lasitng beige head. I’m guessing that it is supposed to be an old ale but can see it’s down as an ESB. A malty ashy aroma, but then too much caramel in the mouth and no sourness. But a tingly dry hop. As a darkish ale, yep, not bad, bit too sweet up front, but the hop stings the teeth on the finish. Interesting. A malt toffee hoppy beer.
