Bottle, Cloisters. Med brown, thin head. The choc and roast malts are assertive, drowning out the kiwi hops (pacific jade and Wakatu?). You get the same effect on the palate, a nice beer but aside from a little woodiness ( not a nz signature) it doesn’t show much hop. A nice burnt porter though.

Not a bad one but quite nothing Special. Starting off with a bit of hops which is followed by some chocolate and coffee. A bit earthy with a bit of unbalanced bitterness.

Bottle from BenH - many thanks to you! The beer pours out in a deep black colour with steady low head and medium body. Aroma of hops and dark grains - nice! Taste of fresh hops, woods, bread, berries, leaves and chocolate. Hints of mild coffee. Finishes off quite earthy but also in a very honest and pure way. Loved the smooth but characterloaded body and deepness. Great beer.

Black with little head but some lacing. Punchy Kiwi hops are obvious and lovely. Very bitter but not unpleasant. Light on the mouthfeel. Medium carbonation. I would not class this as a Black IPA as it is full of roasted flavours (probably from roasted barley, chocolate and/or black malt). As a stout or porter it is too carbonated.

500ml bottle from Appellation Wines, Comely Bank branch. Pours deep dark brown with a good off-white head. Big roasted aromas, lots of chocolate mixed in with the hops, a bit too much for me, more like a hoppy porter or stout. Taste continues this theme, toasty and citrus. Full-bodied, creamy mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Very enjoyable.

500ml bottle from Nina’s Mini Market. Pours a bubbly, light brown head with fine duration and good lacework to the glass. Dark as pitch. Dark malty nose with smell of cocoa breaking through. Roasted, almost burnt, malty taste, dark chocolate, pine needles, ash and some dark spices. Fresh malt bitter ending. Medium bodied. Pretty nice (hotel room, Edinburgh 08.08.2013).

UPDATED: DEC 7, 2013 500ml bottle courtesy of mr_h & Cornelius. Almost black colour, big foamy head. Treacle pine hop aroma. Spicy coffee hop flavour. Bitter aftertaste. A solid black IPA.

Bottle courtesy of Benh. Cheers pal. Pours Deep Black Brown with a thick Tan head. My opinion of this one is similar to the other raters. It’s a hell of a beer in Porter terms. Fruity and thickly roasted. The hoppiness is somewhat apparent on the finish but almost indistinguishable during the drinking of it. That said, it is unusual in a stout or porter to get that slight rush of hops at the end so I salute it.

Bottle shared at the ChrisO Flags of Many Nations Easter Tasting 2013 - London. Pours dark brown with a creamy, off-white head. Burnt chocolate aroma, some roasted malts. Light to medium sweet flavor with hefty charred malt character, a bit of bitter baking cocoa. Light to medium bodied with fine carbonation. Sturdy bitter char and earth to finish, with more bittersweet baking cocoa. Decent, but any juiciness to the hops is overtaken by the potent roasted malt character.

Thanks much to BenH for this bottle! Pours near opaque brown/black with an inch tall dark tan head. Smell is roasted malt, some char, molasses, citrus. Taste is coffee, char, roast, citrus...a lot of stuff swirled together in the flavor apartment. It ends with some dry char with mild bitterness. Body is medium with average carbonation. Decent stuff that has a lot going on but ends up being easy to drink.
