3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 Pawola22 (2203) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - OCT 17, 2011
On cask at Zeno’s Pub in State College, PA. Pours a lightly clouded, deep brown colored body with a finger-width, dense, frothy and creamy, beige head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma is lighter caramel and chocolate with a touch of nutty toast, toffee, and grain. Flavor is similar. Some nuts, a light caramel, and grains up front before a bit of a toffee bread comes in. Chocolate comes out more at the end with some toast and a very light roasted grain. Finishes dry with a light earthy hop bitterness and a clean, simple malt. Medium length aftertaste following a very smooth, soft, medium-light body and a moderate carbonation. Overall, a decent brown. Nothing special, but it does have a light nutty toast and chocolate with a balanced hint of roast and hop bitterness. Not bad.

On tap at the brewpub. Aroma comes as a glassy melange of salts and browned bread. Pours a rather dusky shade of earth, with minimal head. Flavors carries weak salted peanuts through calming butter toasted. Very subtle roast and caramel flavors. Reduced and mildly alcoholic. Not nearly enough malt density to play off of, or hops for a sense of roundedness. Finishes clean. Filtered tasting.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 kramer (3457) - Sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA - JAN 27, 2008
On tap, at brewpub. Pours a mostly clear dark brown body with some tarnished brass highlights under a small foamy beige head. The nose and flavor are in lock-step, lightly nutty and toasty with some coffee and minimal huskiness. The hops were a little more noticeable on the flavor though. I think maybe a little watery overall, but not especially. Moderate soft carbonation. Overall, this was pretty nice, and had a good bit of character to it.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 3fourths (6403) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - JAN 19, 2008
Dark brown with red and burgundy hues at the bottom of the glass, and a tan, firm, patchy head. Sweet malts in the nose: brown sugar, some toasted grains or toated bread, and even some light roast noticed. Flavor turns more towards ashy maple syrup over time, with some dry hops and light char noticed as well, before finishing slightly on the sweet side (caramel malt). A surprising, good brown that is fresh and lively, and hoppy for the style.
