TheGrandMaster (1848), Auckland, New Zealand May 19, 2007 Half pint gravity fed from the cask at the Ealing Beer Festival. A sweet, but alcoholic, toasted aroma. Like red wine on the palate - gravelly, oak, and tannins. Malty, got stronger and more bitter through the glass. Magicdave6 (5400), London, Greater London, England Mar 30, 2007 From the old plastic carton, this fucked me up quite bad without realising it and ended up jibbering to some couple for about 3 hours. Roasty araoma, touch of dustyness, yeasty yet no alcohol. Taste is seriously full on, like i had to drink this with inveralmond xxx to finish it, and i didnt manage to finish it as it was that full on. Smokey roasty dry coffee molasses bitter molasses too much for me to be honest. Doppelganger (1353), Dry County, Arkansas, USA Feb 19, 2007 Gravity, Dover BF. Black with some brown highlights, sudsy tan head. Rustic smokey roast, lactic sour note. Old fashioned sourness, tart plums, molasses, a touch of anise. Lingering smokey finish. An exuberant beer, jammed with flavor. This really does seems like how dark beer might have tasted 100+ years ago. rauchbier (2993), Isle Of Beer, Lincolnshire, England Jan 25, 2007 Cask, at GBBF 2005. Jet black, thin beige head and gentle condition. Big aromas of sweet liquorice and coffee beans, slightly bitter coffee roast and sweet chocolate in the mouth with some background liquorice that lingers into the finish with some more coffee bitterness.
Finn (1473), Tromsø, Norway Oct 12, 2006 Cask/gravity at Ipswich beer festival 23 Sep 2006. Almost black coloured. Aroma of chocolate and roastedness. A small off-white head. Strong and rich flavour of more chocolate, fruit and coffee. Some bitterness in the finish. Well rounded. gnoff (3560), Göteborg, Sweden Sep 12, 2006 (500 ml bottle at Delirium Café in Gothenburg) Very dark deep red color, tan head. Scent is smoke and burnt rubber. Very sharp bitterness, unpleasant. Old stale cold coffee. Old rug carpet tounge and mouth feel. Dry old oak palate. Was my bottle old or something, how can this get good ratings? TroughMonkey (6), England does not count Sep 3, 2006 No longer Eastwood & Sanders, just E&S. Wow! This is an amazingly concentrated Porter, with so much going on..... Almost black in appearance, dark chocolate & subtle coffee aromas, an explosion of complex flavours on a very full-bodied palate, including yet more dark chocolate, coffee, roast malt bitterness & a balanced hoppiness through to the memorable finish. A must try! Svesse (2601), Hässelby, Sweden Aug 26, 2006 (Cask at GBBF, London, 2 Aug) Colour is pitch black with pale brown foamy head. Nose is roasted with heavy aromas of freshly ground coffee, espresso, dark chocolate, soy sauce and tar. Taste is raosted, malty with full flavours of strong, black coffee, some chocolate, tar and liquorice. Full body. The bitterness comes through in the finish when the other flavours give way for a lovely hop character, and it is very bitter (probably with som help from the roasted malt). Complex! Absolutely lovely. In my opinoin, the best beer at the GBBF this year.
