4.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
(Cask at GBBF, London, 2 Aug) Colour is pitch black with pale brown foamy head. Nose is roasted with heavy aromas of freshly ground coffee, espresso, dark chocolate, soy sauce and tar. Taste is raosted, malty with full flavours of strong, black coffee, some chocolate, tar and liquorice. Full body. The bitterness comes through in the finish when the other flavours give way for a lovely hop character, and it is very bitter (probably with som help from the roasted malt). Complex! Absolutely lovely. In my opinoin, the best beer at the GBBF this year.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Cask-conditioned at Mr Foley’s Cask Ale House, Leeds 23/06/09. Dark mahogany with a slight tan head. Big caramel and coffee aroma. Flavour started with some sweet, milk chocolate before roastiness kicked in, leading to a warming alcohol and moderately bitter finish. Excellent.

2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
From the old plastic carton, this fucked me up quite bad without realising it and ended up jibbering to some couple for about 3 hours. Roasty araoma, touch of dustyness, yeasty yet no alcohol. Taste is seriously full on, like i had to drink this with inveralmond xxx to finish it, and i didnt manage to finish it as it was that full on. Smokey roasty dry coffee molasses bitter molasses too much for me to be honest.

[3261-20100803] Cask sample. Coffee porter and roast malt aroma. Black body with a medium-lasting bubbly light tan head. Dry-roasted coffee grounds flavour. Full body. Interesting, quite a lot of coffee and is super rich but a little one dimensional.

Bright bottled at Chappel Fest. Wow! I know strong dark beers tend to get big responses, but this one deserves praise. Mouthfeel is soft, yeilding, seductive, vaginal, lingering, explorative, twisting, expressive, just plain ol’ yummy. Flavours are smokey, licorice, chocolate, coffee - all fresh, balanced, in harmony. Fruit notes. Bitter notes. Sweetness. It’s all here in one exquisite package. O yes. Beer of the month!

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
(Cask@Gallows, Espoo) Very dark brown with almost no head. Licorice-malty, somewhat roasty aroma. Roasty-burned-malty, smoky-tarry flavor with lots of licorice and some solventy alcohol. Medium, slicky body with no carbonation. Nice licorice, but somewhat spoiled by solvents.

Cask at GBBF 2011. It pours opaque black, with a decent bubbly light tan head. The nose is varnish, cardamom, sage, earth, coffee and lots of roasted malt. The taste is sweet caramel, roasted malt, coffee, salted liquorice, pepper, spice, astringency, burnt malt and bitter chocolate, with a dry-roasty finish. Full body and soft carbonation. A tasty porter.
