3.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Half pint, hand-pulled cask at GBBF. Appealing, dark-ruby body. Missing head. Coffee malt to the nose. More taste of coffee in flavour supported by anise and silky chocolate. Underlying alcohol hints. Quite well made porter with a pleasant palate (shared with Geir, 08.08.2008).

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 13/20
Cask at the Back of Beyond, Reading. Wondered if this would live up to its reputation, and it does- just about. It’s black with no head. Sumptuous rich mouthfeel. Chocolate, tobacco and leather up front with a plum-like fruitiness following, giving more than a hint of port. The alcohol shows through as you drink more and by the end is really a little too obvious. Possibly a bit on the sweet side too, but a decent porter nevertheless.

500ml bottle. ar: strong nose from dark malts. ap: almost black with thick head. ta: strong roasted malt. pa: appropriate for style and abv. ov: strongly flavoured dark beer. I would be pushed to categorise this as a porter or a sweet stout if I tasted it blind. Good beer.

UPDATED: NOV 16, 2013 (Cask, Rainhill Beer Fest): Black with a small off white head. Lots of roasted malt, caramel, coffee, chocolate, dark fruits on the nose. Very rich and powerful taste, notes of roasted malt and caramel initially, some nuts and dark fruits then finishes with a burnt coffee note. It’s flavour is very powerful, even at 6.5% which isn’t relatively big, this is a sipping beer. Lovely.

Taste is muscovado sugar sweetness, with a woody dryness following along. Smooth palate, but with a bitter, long, dry, roasty finish. Very nice.
