COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask; Regular. Also available bottled (not bottle conditioned). A special dry-hopped 4.3% version was released in 2004 under the name Beaten Weed.
Nettlethrasher, brewed to a 4.4% ABV, is a deep copper coloured traditional strong ale, brewed using six different malts and developing interesting flavours from the combined use of English and American hop varieties. All this goes together to make this a mighty mouthful!

Cask handpump at the Hop Pole, Aylesbury, Bucks 07-12-09 Pours amber with a filmy white head. Some malt and light fruit and veg’. Taste is smooth but bitter, there is a crisp celery like bite, though doesn’t taste like celery may I add, finish is dry, really enjoyable beer. A6 A4 F8 P4 Ov14 3.6

Cask, The Old Bridge Hotel, Holmfirth. Darkish copper looks with a mid sized white head. Malt driven with some hoppage in the nose and flavour. Is this supposed to tatste of nettles ? Didn’t pick up on that really. Bitter finish. Drinkable but in no way exciting. As a footnote , Mark E Smith was drinking in here with the rest of The Fall prior to playing at the Picturehouse next door which is probably more interesting than this beer.

Cask, gravity, at Milton Keynes BF ’08. Copper amber. Rice pudding and treacle aroma. Pleasant, sweet malty taste. Some bitterness. Inoffensive and amiable beer.

Cask in the 3 Judges. Aroma is grassy bittering hop, very raw bittering hop. Taste is similar, its like theres no body just bittering hop, though its dark and slightly muddy. Not my deal.

Cask conditioned at Drayton Beer fest ’07. Copper colour with white head. The beer of this festival for me, richly malted, toffee like in parts, with light but flowery hop notes. Flavourful to the end. A good bitter.

Cask@The Red Lion, Isleworth. A fairly dry and quite earthy bitter. Quite malty to start, but generally balanced between the malts and the dry lightly citric, earthy hop notes. A little dull i thought.

Cask half-pint at NERAX on 5/5/07
Light beige head quickly recedes to partial-cover, leaving no real lacing. Not quite bright, is the dark, amber-brown body with sort of a mauve sheen to it.
Very strong hoppiness in the nose is citric and even shows some oily, very dry resins. A bit of nuttiness and powdered hazelnut lingers on the end, with just a trace of honey sweetness. Very underwhelming in the malt department, seemingly too attenuated and exposing tannins. Possibly somewhat oxidized as well, as there was a lot of breadiness and some cardboard. Hop aromatics have faded to just pure citrus (grapefruit, lemon). Not flawed though.
Wow. This is just obnoxiously bitter. Very light in the hop flavor department for how many IBUs this has (purportedly 44). And that’s a lot of bitterness for this style. The malt dosent handle the IPA like bitterness, leaving too much hazelnut astringency and chocolate malt dryness. Tannic, rather grainy and soggy with way too much bitterness and hop-tea character.
