The only self-proclaimed ‘Belgian stout’ – 9% by volume – named after famed Belgian detective Hercule Poirrot and considered a World Classic.
Made in small batches, then lagered for ten days in German oak casks.
"The Hercule is considered by many to be a classic – very malty, but dry, with a hint of sweetness in the finish, and perfectly hopped. It has a very distinctive and intoxicating spicy aroma of fresh spruce that suddenly, irresistibly, fills the room when the swing-top is released. This unique house character probably derives from the strains of yeast used by the brewery – and possibly from the fermentation in oak – because the beers are made entirely of malt and hops, without any spices or sugar."

Aroma of yeast, roasted and some chocolate and some licorice. Taste of the same. For me this imperial stout has way to much yeast in the aroma and taste.

Bottle from BeerExpress. BB Jan 2017. Pours reddish brown with a big light beige head. Head’s retention and lace very good. The aroma is somewhat roasty, but more sourish of red berries, yeast... Sourish, bitter taste... Dryish ashy on the palate, light-bodied. Carbonation very moderate, almost nonexistent. Finish is surprisingly bitter. Not anything near a stout I think. Quite a swindle considering the supposed style, high rating, and price tag (was around € 4.50). In itself not bad though...

Dark with an ivory top. Medium sweet caramel nose, ripe banana. Taste of burnt bitter caramel, moss tea, ashy as they mostly are more than smoky and higher abv. is more a player sitting on the bench. A bit sugary actually, ashy and bitter with a carbonated mineral water touch. Good part is it is dry, not sticky.

Visual: Bottle conditioned. Pours dark brown with a very small dissipating head, a thin hazy layer of retention, micro bubbles here and there. Nose: sweet caramel barley malts, (lvl-7)-pungency Attack: half crisp/slick, low CO2 Mid-palate: (lvl-5)-sweetness, (MAIN) brown sugar, light roasted barley malt, soy sauce, almost salty, cola, licorice, gingerbread spices, > light tingly mouthfeel Finish: residual soft bittersweet maltiness, minor tangy, roasted barley exhale, clean finish. Summary: The initial sip was underwhelming seeing that it is bottle conditioned yet drank with quite low carbonation. As it warms however, layers of of clean flavours emerge. Very sippable, well hidden ABV - not as heavy as 9% suggests. I would have preferred a creamier mouthfeel though.

Roasted malts, malts, chocolate, yeast and fruit.

Turbid ruby/black beer with a slight/medium off-white/brown head.

Starts medium sweet with malts, roasted malts and chocolate; ends slightly dry and bitter with yeast and fruit.

Possibly on of the most overrated beers on RB. Very little body for the type, little complexity, quite watery.

0,33l bottle. Dark brown colour with big foamy quickly disappearing tan head. Aroma: caramel, coffee, toffee, fruits, raisin. Taste: Sweet matly start than the medium bitter coffee like caracter dominates. Light carbonation, full body. Rich bitter/sweet finish. Best stout I tasted so far.
