COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottle; Unfiltered.
The only self-proclaimed ‘Belgian stout’ – 9% by volume – named after famed Belgian detective Hercule Poirrot and considered a World Classic.
Made in small batches, then lagered for ten days in German oak casks.
"The Hercule is considered by many to be a classic – very malty, but dry, with a hint of sweetness in the finish, and perfectly hopped. It has a very distinctive and intoxicating spicy aroma of fresh spruce that suddenly, irresistibly, fills the room when the swing-top is released. This unique house character probably derives from the strains of yeast used by the brewery – and possibly from the fermentation in oak – because the beers are made entirely of malt and hops, without any spices or sugar."

Bottle @ Wellington Arms, Bedford. Pours darkest brown, almost black. A nice bit of tan head circles the glass. Smoke, salted caramel and hazelnut in the aroma. A bit of shellfish, almost like an oyster stout. Taste is standard sweet with strong bitter edges. Great beer, but is it quite worth the 9%?

Bottle @home. Pours black with a beige, adhesive head. Malty aroma. Taste malty, light bitterness with a smokey aftertaste. A very accessible stout, but maybe a bit too commonplace.

Tres bien.

Bottle @ home from Delices et Caprices in Brussels. Pours a very deep dark brown color, almost black, with a light brown head. Aroma is roasted malts, cacao, dark chocolate, cookies. Taste is hops, a little sour, heavy alcohol. A little salmiak in the aftertaste. The aroma hinted of a chocolate taste, but I taste nothing of the like. The looks and aroma promised me more sweetness than I get. Disapointed at first, but it seems to grow on me. Very different from the sweet, coffee-like stouts.

Tap, black pour with a thin tan head. Aromas of herbs, and subtle notes of dark fruits. Flavor is earthy at first with notes of anise, then notes of dark fruit, dates, some plum. Very complex and different.
