The only self-proclaimed ‘Belgian stout’ – 9% by volume – named after famed Belgian detective Hercule Poirrot and considered a World Classic.
Made in small batches, then lagered for ten days in German oak casks.
"The Hercule is considered by many to be a classic – very malty, but dry, with a hint of sweetness in the finish, and perfectly hopped. It has a very distinctive and intoxicating spicy aroma of fresh spruce that suddenly, irresistibly, fills the room when the swing-top is released. This unique house character probably derives from the strains of yeast used by the brewery – and possibly from the fermentation in oak – because the beers are made entirely of malt and hops, without any spices or sugar."

Black, strong white (!) head. The aroma... that really could be spruce, and some smokiness. Very interesting, the flavour is also some sort of conifer or pine, with some smokiness and roastiness. Bittersweet, well balanced. Like a burning Christmas tree, perhaps. Finishes bitter and lasting. Nice.

33 cl bottle @ Cevoise Mons. Difficult to see the colour with their glass. Strong aroma of roasted malt and fruits. Taste of liquorice, yeast, chocolate. Slightly bitter. Nice one

My first Belgian Imperial Stout and very happy to report its’ majesty. From the cutest bottle ever pours an inky black elixir with a light tan head which leaves a lacing worth of imperialism. Massive notes of dried sweet and tart cranberry and cherry, chocolate, espresso, grapes, vanilla and some light burnt bread and woodiness. The taste is bold and bittersweet, all the smells being present and mixing with ease. Hints of woodsmoke and cigar are enjoyably present. I wouldn’t know this was 9% from a single sip. Finishes with a nice bitter dark cocoa blast. Such depth. The mouthfeel is a tiny bit thin but it doesn’t diminish the experience of this fine brew.

Bottle. Pours very dark brown with a decent mostly lasting beige creamy head that leaves great lacing. Weak aroma of caramel. Surprisingly light body for a stout, thin to oily texture, big flavors of coffee and dark chocolate, average carbonation and a bitter chocolate/coffee finish.

330ml bottle [even if it wouldn’t have been a Herculean task to get hold of another bottle of this, some detective work would have had to be done - bartlebier spared me any inconvenience by mucking out his "Augean stables" full of Belgian classics and subjoining an exemplar to our recent BBW-NRWUK trade - thank you very much Frangatha Poirot!). Darkest brown colour with mahogany glimmer, average, frothy, half-way lasting, moderately lacing, beige to tan head. Tartish vinegar aroma speaks for infection; notes of roasty dark malt, balsamico, brine, dill, gherkin, soup cube, lovage, a touch of vanilla. Taste is dry, roasty dark malty with subtle sweetness, minimally tart and salty, notes of liquorice, a touch of balamico; lasting, dry, oaky finish. Irregardless indications of infection, a rich and complex, spicy Imperial Stout with astonishing easiness. [Maybe Hermes didn’t treat Hercules with care during his last διακομιδ&#
