3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 TAR (2236) - Lafayette, USA - JUL 4, 2002
UPDATED: AUG 26, 2006 Best before Aug. 2002- Putty colored foam which resembles the buoyancy and density of a lily pad. Smooth giant roastiness dominates the nose. Aroma is also vinous with hints of Concord grape and cardboard. The palate packs a whallop with a hot fudge-like texture and unique carbonation. Oily, fluffy, and smooth. A light chocolate tinge hits before an array of flavors. Coffee leads most of the way, with whispers of chocolate and caramel. Oh so slight trace of alcohol. The finish is rich, grainy, and burnt. A most brilliant concept here. I expected more Belgian yeast traits and fruitiness, but the chocolate/coffee surprisingly dominated. Good, but merely a shadow of its former self.
2.4 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20 JEK69 (136) - FRANCE - MAY 16, 2012
Pours dark with beige medium foam head.
Note powerful nose. Actually smells is 80% like porter but 20% make think about Belgium style: a blend of roasted malt, chocolate and mallty/yeasty notes.
Very alcoholic, lack of complexity and length in mouth. Awkward acidity that melts badly with the hot alcoholic sensation.
That beer finishes on a harsch note and bitter/smoky aftertaste.
You can get more complex similar beers with 3% ABV less than this (Aphrodisiaque by Dieu du Ciel is a "Must Drink" for me !).

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 SaintMatty (2850) - Uppsala, SWEDEN - MAY 7, 2012
330ml Bottle (de Garre, Brugge) - Black with a foamy head. Coffee, caramel and chocolate feature in the aroma. Smooth and roasted taste with notes of caramel, chocolate, coffee and liquorice. Really easy to drink, especially for the strength.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 BeerBeCue (21) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - MAY 4, 2012
330ml bottle. Aroma is porto and moka with alcohol in the background. Cherries appear as the beer warms up a bit. Color is dark brown/black with a minimal head. Taste is light-medium sweet. Body is medium with a slick texture, and soft carbonation. Overall a good stout with a strong belgian influence. Quite peculiar...it was served a bit too cold for my taste initially, but after about 10-15minutes it warmed up a bit and expressed its caracter more fully (cherries). A nice experience.
3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 17/20 wchesser (338) - Denver, Colorado, USA - MAY 2, 2012
Popped the top and was hit with a blast of soy sauce from almost two feet away. A sniff revealed more of the same as well as some stewed prunes and other dark fruit. Very low carbonation and well integrated alcohol. Watery dark brown. Light and thin palate for an ’imperial’. Taste follows nose, some good sweetness and a lingering dark roast coffee finish. Quite unique.
3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Benjii (2405) - Edinburgh, SCOTLAND - APR 28, 2012
Bottle from The House of Trembling Madness. A black beer with a thick tan head that dies away fairly quickly. A sweet aroma of candy sugar, caramel, roasty malt, chocolate and alcohol. Similar flavours with moderate carbonation and a foamy mouth-feel. Alcohol is fairly present. A little too sweet for my tastes.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 laiti (1677) - Tampere, FINLAND - APR 3, 2012
33 cl bottle @ ISKTR. Rated on 20.03.2011
Aroma has oat, some chocolate and licorice. Flavour has lots of oat, some chocolate and salty licorice. Not a very Belgian stout, this has more elements from oatmeal stuff.
