COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottle; Unfiltered.
The only self-proclaimed ‘Belgian stout’ – 9% by volume – named after famed Belgian detective Hercule Poirrot and considered a World Classic.
Made in small batches, then lagered for ten days in German oak casks.
"The Hercule is considered by many to be a classic – very malty, but dry, with a hint of sweetness in the finish, and perfectly hopped. It has a very distinctive and intoxicating spicy aroma of fresh spruce that suddenly, irresistibly, fills the room when the swing-top is released. This unique house character probably derives from the strains of yeast used by the brewery – and possibly from the fermentation in oak – because the beers are made entirely of malt and hops, without any spices or sugar."

Donkerbruin, bijna zwart bier met beige schuimkraag. Aroma: gebrand mout, chocolade, drop, gebrande koffie, stroop. Smaak is bitterzoete, droog. Weinig koolzuur, crèmeïg in de mond.

From tap@Delirium. Black color with a disappearing beige brownish head. Nose. Mocha, roasted black Malts, hop aroma, black fruit. Taste, roasted malts, chocolate, raisins, has a fruity touch. Finish is bitter and dry, but also a sweet touch is present. Coffee in the finish, very present in the end, without being too much. Not sticky at all, and good drinkable. Very enjoyable, great stout...

The first really big stout in Belgium since 1995, can be considered as a kind of atypical imperial, but a mighty ale in its own right and a popular Wallonian classic. Dense, yellowish beige head, becoming thinner and eventually breaking under influence of the alcohol. Almost black colour with burgundy hue. Powerful, complex aroma of deep dark maltiness, aromatic hops, chocolate, sweet apple, candied cherries, hazelnuts, liquorice, sweet sherry and candi syrup. Sweet but not sticky in the mouth, very chocolatey, raisins, liquorice, caramel, smooth and a bit oily, soft and gradual bitterness appearing later, coffee-like roastedness but in a gentle kind of way and beautifully supported by flowery hops and warming alcohol; the initial candi-like sweetness lingers, but does not cloy. Great one.

Een typische stout met zijn heel uitgesproken smaak. Maar dat is niet echt mijn ding

0,33L bottle, BB 12.15. Pours very dark brown with tan head. The head stays. Aroma is roast, fruits, apples, coffee. Flavor is sweet, fruits, roast, coffee, licorice. Finish hoppy coffee bitter with some fruits. Alcohol is well hidden for ABV. Overall: very nice brew.

Bottle: pours dark brown with tan head. I taste some semi- chocolate but not coffee. fairly mild beer overall taste wise. The booze seems pretty hidden too. Good beer, but I can find stouts I like more for less money.

Dark pour with beige head. Aroma is sweetish roasted malts, dark berries. Roasted malts, slight sweetness, alcohol warmth on the finish. Dry. Like an imperial Guinness. A bit bland.

Dark brown, clear, think tan head, low carb. Aroma of dark fruits, ripe plums, earthy spice, some toffee sweetness and dark chocolate. Flavor: cocoa, baker’s chocolate, lots of dark fruits, light toffee, nutty notes, lightly oaky, warming.

Bottle from Beers of the World. I had this years ago, remember an empty bottle adorning our beer bottle room decoration at university, also vaguely remember being slightly underwhelmed. So here’s another try. Dark brown colour, reddish brown hints, thick white head, quite high carbonation. Initial thoughts are a bit thin, bit of booze, long ash tray roasty malt finish. It’s ok. I really don’t get the excitement of this highly rated beer though - I’ve actually found nearly all Belgian stouts or beers with a darker malt bill than a kind of ruddy brown to be a bit underwhelming, even from breweries I normally love.

Bottle sample at a tasting at Dancing Camel. Thanks Tom L. Black with beige head. Slightly vegetal, a little smooth and sweet taste that then turns smoky. Dry, wood and roastiness in the mouth. medium-bodied, long, roasty finish. Really good.
