The only self-proclaimed ‘Belgian stout’ – 9% by volume – named after famed Belgian detective Hercule Poirrot and considered a World Classic.
Made in small batches, then lagered for ten days in German oak casks.
"The Hercule is considered by many to be a classic – very malty, but dry, with a hint of sweetness in the finish, and perfectly hopped. It has a very distinctive and intoxicating spicy aroma of fresh spruce that suddenly, irresistibly, fills the room when the swing-top is released. This unique house character probably derives from the strains of yeast used by the brewery – and possibly from the fermentation in oak – because the beers are made entirely of malt and hops, without any spices or sugar."

Pours black clear color, with foamy light brown, yellowish head. Visually low carbonation with small up rising bubbles. Aroma: prevails roasted malt character with notes of dark chocolate, tobacco and with slightly burnt undertones, and some fruity esters of dark fruits. Flavor is similary the same: with moderate roasted barley, which takes on dark chocolate, cocoa, with intense fruity esters, which takes on dark fruits, like reisines, prunes and plumes. Finish is slightly burnt, bitter sweet. Body is full, smooth silky. Alcohol warmth is very gentle. Carbonation is moderate.

Draft at Ei8ht Ball, served in a flight. Pours a deep, cloudy cola brown with an off-white head that settles into a ring and film while heavily lacing the glass. Notes of chocolate, tobacco, earth, weat leaves, toast, brown sugar, oak, and dark fruits (dates, figs, and plum), with a faint moldiness to it. Medium-bodied, with medium carbonation and an earthy, sweet mouthfeel that starts sweeter and more chocolaty and becomes more fruity and leafy as it goes on. Not really my kind of imperial stout, but it’s okay.

Bottle from Utobeer, Borough Market, London. Poured a very dark brown colour with a lasting firm beige head. Aroma of malty caramel and chocolate. Body is lighter than usual for style and texture a little on the thin side. Finish has a slight roasting. Enjoyed it, and it’s a style I adore, though have had much better.

Bottle. Black. Pretty nice nose. Not the usual roasty ashy coffeishy whatevery stouty drink, but quite fruity, belgian. Blueberries, fruity yeasty esters, but in a darker, roasty coffeish manner. Med bodied, quite smooth nice easy drinkable. Wouldn’t be surprised at all if this would be labeled as a blueberry (with ginger) stout. Has soft roast, but very fruity.
