The only self-proclaimed ‘Belgian stout’ – 9% by volume – named after famed Belgian detective Hercule Poirrot and considered a World Classic.
Made in small batches, then lagered for ten days in German oak casks.
"The Hercule is considered by many to be a classic – very malty, but dry, with a hint of sweetness in the finish, and perfectly hopped. It has a very distinctive and intoxicating spicy aroma of fresh spruce that suddenly, irresistibly, fills the room when the swing-top is released. This unique house character probably derives from the strains of yeast used by the brewery – and possibly from the fermentation in oak – because the beers are made entirely of malt and hops, without any spices or sugar."

From a flip top bottle. Pours out dark brown almost black topped with a long lasting sand head. Aroma lots of sweet malts, dark chocolate, and coffee. Taste is about the same as the aroma with lots of sweetness and a nice touch of coffee.

7/31/2007 3:00:33 PM Bottle at home, from cracked kettle. Dark brown black even colour. Large oaky head. Scent of wheat, toast, chocolate. Amazing how little alcohol you taste. Flavours of coffee, toffe, chocolate and also raisins. Love this stout. Very enjoyable. Full-bodied. Superb lacing. Clean finish.

6 oz pour from tap at 48 degrees into a miniature sniffer glass at Churchkey in DC. Black and opaque with a big root-beer-float-like off-white head. Nose isn’t as much as I’d like. A bit roasty, woody, and sweet, but not too forward. Very nice body though. Thick and creamy. A lot like ice cream and beer, actually. Fairly dry. Moderate evident carbonation provides a bit of an airy bite on the end. Taste is awesome. Roasty, a bit sweet, woody, a little boozy, a little coffee, earthy, a little raisin, maybe some vanilla. Complex. Very good.

This one has all the bells and whistles that I look for in an imperial stout. Black as night, beautiful lacing, a smell that differs from all other imperial stouts I’ve had in a positive way. But the real slam dunk I look for is taste. It just didn’t do it for me. Maybe it’s time for me to ’fes up and say "I don’t like Belgian beer."

330ml flip-top bottle at home. BB 03/2017. almost black color, medium big tan/pinkish head. smells malty roasted, quite earthy, light sour note, leather, very subtle fruit notes. full body, medium carbonation, full mouthfeel. tastes earthy, leather, charcoal, light alcohol, light wood, spices, peat like notes, lightly sour. finishes with spices, earthy notes, charcoal and a bit of a sharp taste. good brew, would rate this even higher if it had some more notes than just ash / charcoal / earth / leather. Also as mentioned has some sharp alcoholic notes toward the finish. Actually the note gets a bit more prominent when it warms up -> -0.1. There are too many good beers in this ABV range, so not sure I would seek this out again.

Roasted, coffee, chocolate, herbal. Taste is dry, light sourish and malted. Ok stout, not my favorite, light sourness is a bit annoying imo

A bit rosty, coffee and star anis in the aroma, but not overwhelming. Apperarance typical for the style with fine and not to much foam. The taste is good but not intense and doesn’t last that long. Not to sweet. Lacks volume and creamy palate, but fine carbonation. Conclusively a good beer, but not the best Imperial stout I have tasted.
