Bhops (138), Dallas, Texas, USA May 1, 2008 Bottle. Pours pure black, with medium cream colored head. Strong aroma of toffee/caramel... I could smell this beer all day. Flavor of roast chocolate... Super smooth.... would keep it on the short list if available.
daknole (483), Plantation, Florida, USA Jun 23, 2008 Black black pour with a nice light brown head. This beer has more toasty notes than a lot of imp stouts you will encounter. But don’t let that fool you, it is very very good. Smooth and flavorful. The bottle I had was quite carbonated. Overall a winner. jrob_21 (813), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Jun 22, 2008 Is the requisite opaque black color. Also features a decent tan head that doesn’t quit. Very smooth Impy stout but this one isn’t going to blow you away with complexity or an overpowering roasted malt flavor. Aroma is faintly roasted malt with some cocoa. Flavor has the coffee malt aspect and once you finally swallow you get a subtle fruity and chocolatey experience. Good but not exceptional or memorable in any sort of way to make me go back to this one over another, say, Abyss or something of that ilk. Marsiblursi (1248), Göteborg, Sweden Jun 18, 2008 (Bottle) Pours dark brown with red hints and a creamy off-white head. The aroma is light roasted and quite fruity with tones of milk chocolate, plums, raisins, dates, figs, pears, sweet cherries, apricots, some salty/sweet liquorice and a touch of perfume-ish, nail polish like alcohol. Sweet notes of caramel and dark sugar/candy sugar. Subtle spicy. The flavour is light to medium roasted with tones of chocolate. Bit salty and light to medium hop bitter on the finish. Undertones of dark fruits like figs, dates, raisins and prunes, liquorice, brown sugar, caramel and some subtle spiciness. The mouthfeel is soft and well carbonated with a dry, light sour and light bitter ending. Medium bodied. bhensonb (2677), Woodland, California, USA Jun 14, 2008 33 cl. bottle. Dark brown color with ruby hilites. Significant beige/tan head. Aroma of dark toasted malt, coffee and treacle. Near medium body with creamy carbonation. Flavor is toasted malt, wood/oak, coffee and treacle. Has a bit of zing in the mouthfeel. Very tasty. More complex than I’m describing. If you see it, get it. JCB (820), Durham, North Carolina, USA Jun 12, 2008 Bottle from Sam’s, Durham. Yum, this is a tasty brew. Initial pour was very fizzy and lively, as seems often to be the case with Belgian stouts. Strong aroma of vegetal funk and molasses. But as the brew warms up, it’s a crisp hoppy imperial with some modest roasts in there to complement the aforementioned qualities. Body is a tad too thin for my taste, but a very enjoyable brew.
