3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
This is a classic case of a beer having more bark than its bite. The nose is great - smoky, oatmeal, dark fruits. The palate is thin - really difficult to distinguish a flavor besides smoked malts. Appearance is nice and dark, not pitch black. Wish I got more out of this beer taste and palate-wise, but the nose and appearance save it.

Dark brown, clear, think tan head, low carb. Aroma of dark fruits, ripe plums, earthy spice, some toffee sweetness and dark chocolate. Flavor: cocoa, baker’s chocolate, lots of dark fruits, light toffee, nutty notes, lightly oaky, warming.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle from Beers of the World. I had this years ago, remember an empty bottle adorning our beer bottle room decoration at university, also vaguely remember being slightly underwhelmed. So here’s another try. Dark brown colour, reddish brown hints, thick white head, quite high carbonation. Initial thoughts are a bit thin, bit of booze, long ash tray roasty malt finish. It’s ok. I really don’t get the excitement of this highly rated beer though - I’ve actually found nearly all Belgian stouts or beers with a darker malt bill than a kind of ruddy brown to be a bit underwhelming, even from breweries I normally love.

Bottle sample at a tasting at Dancing Camel. Thanks Tom L. Black with beige head. Slightly vegetal, a little smooth and sweet taste that then turns smoky. Dry, wood and roastiness in the mouth. medium-bodied, long, roasty finish. Really good.

Black. Beige head. Wonderful aroma of dark berries and roasted barley. Lots of roasted barley in taste, and in the long, moderately bitter, aftertaste.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
33 cl. flip-top bottle pored in to a Snifter. Pitch black with a dense, tanned head. Roasted aroma with chocolate, yeasts, coffee, rich malts, liquorice, red berries and a herbal-grassy bitterness. Taste is bitter and roasted. Medium to full body with a oily texture and an average carbonation. Finishes dry and roasted with rich malts, chocolate and yeasts. Excellent Stout.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
From notes. Enjoyed at the Ashley’s Rare & Vintage Beer TasteFest on June 07. I was terribly unimpressed by this offering. Don’t know if it was a bad bottle, or what, but it just wasn’t great at all. The pour was a thin dark brown, letting a lot of light through. There is a thin light tan head, no lace. The aroma has a light malt to it, and a strong earthiness. The flavor is much of the same. It tastes as if dirt and water were mixed together and presented in my glass. The mouth feel is thin and slick, minimal carbonation, and a dirty lingering aftertaste.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
330ml flip top bottle, poured into La Chouffe chalice. A: Very dark mahogany, pretty much opaque, one finger tanned head, good retention, decent amount of lacing. S: Cranberry, molasses, very much like a Belgian Dubbel, but slightly less fruity. T: Espresso, cocoa bean, creamy diacetyl, molasses, slight cranberry, slight bitterness which becomes more pronounced as the beet warms. Did a very good job of hiding the booze. M: Light body for the high abv, very smooth, creamy texture. O: A complex, balanced interpretation of an Imperial stout, a bit of a stout/dubbel mash up.
