COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This recipe scored a bronze medal at the 2003 GABF in the American Strong Pale Ale category. It screams out "HOPS" from the first whiff to the last lingering drop. Pair that with 7.5% alc./weight and you'll be sure to understand just what the judges saw in this beer.

Serving: from tap at Elliott Bay Brewhouse & Pub. Aroma: moderate, piney hoppy aroma. Appearance: very small, off-white, initial head with fair lacing and fully diminishing longevity. Hazy, medium-amber body. Taste: moderately bitter initial flavor, and moderately bitter and lightly sour, lemony finish with average duration. Palate: medium bodied with dry texture and soft carbonation. Overall: just another hoppy ale.

Draft - Sweet caramel east coast style.  Hazy copper with a decent head. Lots of caramel and bitterness.  Resinous finish. Odd for something not an IPA.

Deep golden/orange color with a foam that clings well to the glass. Earthy hops along with tangerine and grapefruits. Moderate bitterness but pleasant to drink. Toffee malts try to keep up. Finish drags on with hop flavor and light alcohol.

Draft at West Seattle Brew Pub. Mostly clear golden. Bitter. Mostly what I get is bitterness.

On draught at 10th Annual North American Organic Brewers Festival. Amber color. Aroma is grapefruit and bitter caramel. Taste is bitter grapefruit, tart citrus, and caramel malt. Good, but a little too bitter.

Sampler at source. This should be listed as a DIPA, not ASA. Dark orange amber color that completely covers the side of the glass as you drink it down. Aroma is a fresh bouquet of hops - some citrus, some fruit nicely blended, no/low pine. Medium bitterness on the nose. Alcohol appropriately pleasant with a present neutral malt background. Flavor is hop profile with a medium hip bitterness that overtakes the flavor and leads into the aftertaste. As the beer warms up there is a mild diacetyl character. I could see less sensitive people not picking it up. Also, I don’t mind the character as much but I could see those that dislike it really penalizing the beer for it. I actually think in this case it provides a nice characteristic to balance the hops.

Clear brilliant amber/copper with a sweet copper malt tone with a touch of earthy citric bitterness. Hoppy floral flavor with a caramellish bitter finish. Pretty nice.

Draught in a flight at the brewpub. Pours a slightly hazy amber color. Nose has quite a bit of rye in there for me, along with the pepper that comes with it. Taste is slightly bitter and has a lot of the spicy elements in there. This was only OK for me.

Draft in Burien (month or so back): Hazy amber with a nice head. Crisp. Very fruity; has notes of apple, pear and grapefruit. Finish was toasted and a bit stark, bitterness-wise. Hop aromas lacked depth. Says 140 IBUs, which is unlikely, of course, but it seemed more like 70. Slightly hot from the alcohol. Not bad, but definitely not my favorite from this brewery.

Peachy amber color with a thin head. This definitely screams hops from the first whiff, a stiff one-dimensional, but lovely, floral, leafy dose of Chinook. The flavor remains consistent with a full-press bitter, leafy, Chinook body and dryish raw hop bitter finish.
