3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Growler from Elliott Bay Brewpub. Hazy gold pour with a short white head which leaves minimal lace. This ale is a great balance of the two styles, I believe EB describe it as an IPA made with a Belgian yeast. Nose is slight yeast, hops and alcohol, with a ripe fruit underlay. Bananas and toast mark the lightly sweet and smoky medium body, while grapefruit and pine characterise the hoppy middle and finish. Carbonation is light (growler) in my sample, but probably fizzier from the tap. Sessionable, or at least I hope so as I have a half-gallon growler to finish! A middle-of-the-pack IPA enhanced by a Belgian character.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Sampler, clear pale gold color. Lightly sweet restrained ester with dry biter nonresin hops. Mild mix of fruit happiness. Flavor similar with even more restrained very light esters. Relatively clean finish. Pretty bitter and dry finish. A lighter more dry take on the style than I usually see.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20
Clear light golden with a nose of spicy earthy hops and pear skin and a slight kiss of jalapeño cheddar. Estery earthy start with a nice peppery tone and some light Belgian fruit esters, semisweet and lightly bitter. Grainy but not bready. Would probably go well with Indian food.

2.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20
Draught in a flight at the brewpub. Pours a clear dark golden color. Nose is very light, with some small yeasty odd elements to it. Taste has some light clove elements to it, and seems very Belgian, and not too much IPA. Meh.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
On tap at the pub. I smell Belgian gas, lemon and caramel.. Flavors of egg yolk, white sugar and lemon. Don’t think enough hops here to qualify as an IPA, more like a Belgian Dubel with some extra hops. Cleanly done and all that, just not among my favorite types.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Draft at Elliot Bay, Lake City. Mild yeast on bright hazy yellow. Smooth Belgian herby hop and yeast. Same odd bittering finish on their other IPAs, I don’t know what their hop bill is but it obviously isn’t my favorite. This is a decent ’Belgian style’ IPA though.

On nitro cask at Elliott Bay Brewpub, pours a cloudy golden orange with a medium white head. Nose is a full-on Belgian hybrid, with Belgian yeast, and a bit of candied sugar mixed with floral hops and doughy malt. Flavour of Belgian yeast, lots of dough, and restrained floral hops – again, certainly tastes like a Belgian hybrid. Nice mouthfeel, no doubt aided by the nitro cask, leaving a lightly bitter and yeasty finish. Very enjoyable.
