Name: Hop Von Boorian
Date: September 18, 2009

Source: Brewpub, Elliott
Appearance: hazy orange, frothy off white head, drippy lace
Aroma: sweet malt aroma, touch of candy malt sweetness, lots of floral hops mixed with spicy phenolics
Flavor: flavor starts off sweet but the big floral hops and spicyness kick in to dry it out and leave a long bitter finish
Overall: excellent example of the hoppy Belgian pale

Smell is floral, a little earthy. Citrus, spice, grain malt. Pleasant acidity and bitterness level. Great spicy finish.

Draft at Burien brewery (about a month or so back): Awesome-looking beer: Hazy golden with a head that looked like whipped egg whites. Creamy smooth texture matched the appearance. Grainy malt flavors were easy on the tongue. Hops were super snappy and zingy, with spicy notes of flowers and herbs. Interesting and tasty beer.

Tap @ EB Brewpub. Cloudy gold pour with a short white head leaving moderate lace. RB are going to have to decide what to do with these genre-bender ales! To rate this as a Belgian or an IPA is unfair to the category and the brew. This a very good IPA with a strong Belgian flair which is one of the best Belgian IPAs I’ve had, rivalling Captain Lawrence’s Extra Gold and easily outdistancing Chouffe’s Houblon IPA Tripel. With a Belgian and fresh hop nose, it starts with a hint of sweetness and moving right into resin and citrus hops. Middle is spicy and hoppy with resin, spruce, citrus, black pepper, roast malt and ripe fruit. Finish is more of the same, thought the pepper is more cayenne and the ripe fruit become tart. Medium body and carbonation, this is a winner in the IPA-Belgian Tripel category.

Growler from Elliott Bay Brewpub. Hazy gold pour with a short white head which leaves minimal lace. This ale is a great balance of the two styles, I believe EB describe it as an IPA made with a Belgian yeast. Nose is slight yeast, hops and alcohol, with a ripe fruit underlay. Bananas and toast mark the lightly sweet and smoky medium body, while grapefruit and pine characterise the hoppy middle and finish. Carbonation is light (growler) in my sample, but probably fizzier from the tap. Sessionable, or at least I hope so as I have a half-gallon growler to finish! A middle-of-the-pack IPA enhanced by a Belgian character.

On tap at west Seattle. Looks beautiful deep straw with thin white head in a nice Belgian glass. Excellent lacing. High aroma of floral hops. Good sly balance with a perfect bitterness. The hops and the begian yeast are a great combo. Super beer!

I am beginning to really appreciate Belgian IPAs especially with a middling bitterness. A strong malty yeast body with an IPA mellowed end notes, very drinkable.

Draught @ Elliot Bay - Pours a hazy golden with a small white head...aroma is moderately spicy, some cereal grain and very little hop presence...flavour is initially sweet caramel malt and light clove, some citric hoppiness, but the finish is sweeter and almost takes on a buttered note...decent, but I didn’t care for the lingering finale...

10th October 2008. Hazy gold beer. A little hoppy but not overwhelming. Crisp dry finish. Competant but not that exciting.
