3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 5000 (4109) - Hardened Liver, USA - MAY 1, 2011
Draught @ Brouwer’s Café:   Left over from Hard Liver 2011.   Deep amber, bordering on brown, huge fluffy sandy head, nice lacing.   Soft fruity nose, a little malty alcohol kick.   A bit of medicinal cough syrup on the start, hot, and very warming.   This needs to sit for a bit.   As it warms a little citrus zest on the nose.   Unfortunately not so much on the tongue.   Not real hoppy, malty, semi-sweet, young, slightly medicinal, alcoholic, with a little afterburn.   Yeah, a sipper for sure.   No bottles, but look for aged versions if you want a more mellow experience.   Good, in small doses.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 MartinT (6350) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - MAR 2, 2011
My Bottom Line:
Barley sugar, madeira and subtle raisins decorate this Barley Wine’s refined flavor development.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A ring of foam surrounds the hazy dullish mahogany.
-Alcohol warms up the back end.
-A mineral, almost dusty touch appears in the finish. Age? Water?
-Fruit candy flavors roam within the caramel malts.
On tap at Beveridge Place Pub.
2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 Nena (963) - Seattle, Washington, USA - FEB 25, 2011
Draft, Beveridge Place. Mahogany pour, white head. Not a lot of nose: a little sweet brown sugar and a touch of citrus. Overall, kind of watery for a barleywine. Has flavors of brown sugar, citrus, pit fruit, softly bitter finish, but really didn’t stand up well as a barley wine.
2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20 3fourths (6408) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - APR 13, 2005
UPDATED: JUN 3, 2005 2001 vintage - sampled at the brewery, April 2005
Light orange color with an appearance that is lighter than most in this style. Light floral and grape flavors up front, chaging quickly to pears and cirtus fruit, then dissolving into emptyness after that. Light body, extremely light nose, disappointing for being over 3 years aged.
