An old style mild, strong but carefully hopped to allow the malts to flourish. Liquorice hints balance the lasting nutty finish.

Cask at GBBF 2016. It pours darkest brown with a small head. The aroma is toasty, woody, cacao nibs, damp leaves, sweaty and umami notes. The taste is sweet, oily, treacle, toffee, Eccles cake, dried berry and some sweet sugary notes. The finish is bitter - sweet. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Comes across a bit sugary overall. Fair.

Cask at the Draymans Son, Ely. Very dark brown, opaque, fairly flat with some tan head. Liquorice and hazelnut coffee smell. Fairly mild but enticing. Sweet nutty taste, with more liquorice in the aftertaste. Full body although could do with a bit more carbonation. Really enjoyed this.

Bottle from Beers of Europe
Black, lots of ruby light through at edges of glass, moderate beige head quickly dissipates to nothing.
Aroma - Roasted malts, soft charcoal, slightly smoky, dark fruity malts, more fruity with the drinking, slight sour note
Taste - Roasted malt more mellow than the nose, dark sweet malts, soft fairly sweet dark malts, dark toffee, good flavour but spoiled by a slightly sour note probably related to the condition
Palate - Flat as a pancake, medium light body, fairly sweet, slight sourness, light bitter. Finish as main flavour with dark fruits, and dark fruity chocolate
Overall - Shame this is spoiled by poor condition and it’s a touch sour. Did have some good flavours in there. I’m sure this is much better with a good bottle or on cask.

Bottle from Beers of Europe. (Note they don’t sell this online, only in store) Dark Brown, no head- very disappointing was this. Aroma of caramel, peaty water, dark chocolate. Lacks carbonation, very flat, very thin, same flavours as the aroma with a touch of coffee. Would like to try it on cask.

Cask at GBBF 2012. Poured black, with a dense beige head. Aroma of dark malt, roasted nuts and cocoa. Full, thick mouthfeel. Strong flavours of roasted malt, dates, figs and dark chocolate. Finish was really nicely balanced bitter bunt malt, prunes, molasses and treacle.

Bottle from Beers of Europe via my kids for Fathers Day :-) Poured a clear dark brown with a thin broken off white head. The aroma is roasted malt, nutty hop and a little dark chocolate. The flavour is medium bitter, light sweet with a rich malt, burnt treacle nutty, red berry fruit palate and long smoky bitter finish. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. Lots going on in here. Probably one of the best milds I’ve ever had.
