COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
NIBIRU, named for the mysterious planet X supposedly on a collision course toward earth. Nibiru is a Belgian style tripel flavored with an infusion of yerba mate. Combining the yeasty esters of Belgian yeast and the compelling tea-like flavors of the South American herb mixture, with German Northern Brewer, Czech Saaz and American Amarillo hops round out the uniqueness of this first beer of the Apocalypse. Elysian 12 Beers of Apocalypse #1

650 ml. bottle. Pours aa medium white head, with some lacing, over a clear gold (SRM 5) body....nose is light pear, hints of apple, bit of floral tones, cereal...taste is pear, apple, hints of floral honey, light sweetness, later hint of green pepper, leading to a slightly harsh bite from the hop yerba mate combination which lingers....mouth feel medium, carbonation low. This meets the style, with the exception that pepper aromas and flavors are too hidden. The use of the yerba mate as part of the late bittering in the taste palette is quite clever, but does not really get to the same place that the more typical recipes do. BJCP 7/3/12/4/7

The beer pours a clear, deep golden color with a moderately full, white, fluffy head which settles a rocky layer and leaves scattered lace. The nose is odd with herbal notes mostly; light star anise, some pepper, clove, bready, caramelly, light citrus, and some graham cracker. The flavor is similar with leafy notes, Oreo crumbs, pepper, light clove, anise, light citrus, and some earthy yeast. The palate is medium, soft to lively, watery, and velvety. The finish is bitter, citrus, anise, leafy notes, and some clove in there. Actually a decent beer but not very trippel-like. The spicing was nice but did not add to the style of the beer. Inn the end, the beer drank more like a Single but the end result was fairly marginal.

Bottle thanks to a trade! pours a hazy orangish amber with a white head that dissipates to the edges and laces slightly. Aroma has a decent amount of light fruit with a bit of tea, a sweet grain backing and a nice amount of sweetness. Flavor is sweeter with a good amount of grain and only a hint of light fruit and grassy hops.

Bottle:   Fiery golden, moderate to large frothy white head, spotty lacing.   Pale bready aroma, faint floral or herbal notes.   Very pale Tripel like flavors on the tongue.   I like this in that it isnít overly bready and thick, but it seems pretty simple.   Clean as well.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate.   Herbal finish, slightly bready, a touch sweet.   Enjoyable.

Bottle @ 18th RG. Yellow gold with white head and light lacing. Smells like grassy tart bubble gum. Very clean light tart flavor. Slight wateriness.

Location: 22 oz bottle from State Line, 8/16/12

Aroma: The nose is fairly sweet, some fruit, spice, Belgian yeast, cookie, candied sugar and light tea
Appearance: It pours a hazed golden color with a small, slightly fizzy white head, and light lace
Flavor: The taste is moderately sweet, yeast, tea, a plus-spice component, and a light bitterness
Palate: The body is light-medium, it has a fizzy carbonation, a clean feel, and a slightly dry finish
Overall Impression: Here goes the 1st of the series, which is my 3rd (in reverse order from 3-1). Anyway, this one is pretty interesting. The nose is rather sweet, but the sweetness is balanced out by the spice and light bitterness in the flavor. Overall, it works decently well, but it isnít a standout.

Thanks to 5000 for sending me this bottle. The beer pours a slightly hazy golden color with a white head. The aroma has a lot of passion fruit and other fruit notes, along with some Belgian yeast and some biscuit malt. The flavor is completely different. I get the same tropical fruit and yeast from the aroma, but I also get a big load of herb notes - which I assume is from the Yerba Mate. There is also a light amount of tartness. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

THOUGHTS: Nice. Not a great tripel, but a very nice beer. I was a bit tired when I started trying this and the caffeine in it must be very high because halfway through I was wide awake and slightly anxious. TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a medium to dark yellow to very light orange. Letís just call it golden. It had a small, slightly off-white head that mostly diminished and left just barely fair lacing. The aroma had light to moderate pale malts, light-colored bread, and biscuit; light to moderate herbal and grassy hops; light to moderate spicy yeast; lighter earthy hops; slight funk; banana; some sort of herbal tea; and light fruits. The initial flavor was moderately sweet and slightly acidic; while the finish was moderate to heavily sweet; light to moderately acidic and slight to lightly bitter. There was pale malt, spicy yeast, slightly earthy yeast, herbal tea, light-colored fruits, honey, white bread, cake, slight funk, biscuit, and floral hops. The light to medium body leaned toward medium and was syrupy and a bit oily and then slightly dry with soft but tingly carbonation and a dry and slightly astringent finish.
