12 Beers of the Apocalypse #4. Peste Chocolate Chili Ale will plague you with the rich flavors of cocoa, chilies, and cinnamon in a beer of 7.5% ABV. A blend of Peruvian cocoa, Ceylon cinnamon, and chipotle, guajillo, pasilla, and cayenne peppers make this beer a unique distraction from the approaching end of the world as we know it. Brewed with Pale, Munich, C-77 Crystal, and Chocolate malts with roasted flaked barley, and nominally bittered with Magnum, this is the fourth of our 12 Beers of the Apocolypse heralding the winding down of the Mayan calendar.

Draft. Very dark maroon, almost flat. Aroma of jalapenos and dark milk chocolate. Taste is very peppery chocolate and coffee. Great aroma, and the peppers donít overwhelm the taste, but take your antacids first anyway.

This is probably one of the worst labels Iíve seen.
Black color, with small to no head. Aroma of dark malts, roasted pepper, raw chicken meat, medium percentage chocolate, light chili pepper. Lean mouthfeel, semi-dry; the chocolate flavor is quite nice, but the chili kick is probably a bit too much to really appreciate the beer, itís not exactly elegant; ordinary bitterness.
Not convincing.

Bottle split with DW the wingman at Elysian Seattle, 27/05/13. Murky light black with a thin tan head which clears to the edge, floaties are evident, not a looker ! Nose is chilli, dark chocolate, spice, dark malts, brown sugars. Taste comprises dark chocolate which quickly turns to a habanero burn, green peppers, liqourice, molasses. Medium bodied with fine carbonation, big chilli bite in the finish. Decent chilli beer, not a looker at all, but one of the tastier ones Iíve encountered. Not OTT in the heat stakes but there is a good chilli kick which tempers well with bitter dark chocolate.

Bottle. Pours black with quickly dissipating brown head. Nose of molasses, BBQ sauce, cayenne, cinnamon, chili pepper and toasted chocolate malt. Taste is mostly cayenne pepper with cocoa and toasted chocolate malt and hints of cinnamon. Other chili flavors linger in background. Lingering cayenne pepper heat in finish, but not overpowering. Body is a bit thick at times.

22 oz. bottle, pours a dark brown / black with a small tan head. Aroma of chili flakes upfront, black pepper, not much of the chocolate detectable - pretty much a spice bomb on the nose. Flavour is intensely spicy and peppery, again with not much chocolate character detectable - thin palate. The spice burn dominates, not making this very drinkable. Decent experiment and good follow through for the concept, but the enjoyability factor is low.

Bomber from Malt and Vine. Pours black with a creamy/foamy tan head. Aroma is chili and chocolate. Med body. Flavor is very chili, somewhat chocolate, with a smooth burnt malt backbone. Sort of a chili porter. Doesnít seem to be much bitter, but the chili substitutes well.

Bottle shared by DrSilverworm. Poured a dark brown color with an average fizzy light brown head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate toasted peppers and cinnamon aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium to heavy toasted hot peppers spice flavor with a medium hot spice finish of moderate duration. Solid complex brew.

Bottle. Pours particulate black with no head; particles are reminiscent of powdered chilis. Aroma is heavy peppers, lightly smoked notes, chocolate, raisins and prune notes fight through the peppers. Flavor is heavy peppers and spice, chocolate, light smoke, dark fruity esters, and a sweet finish with plenty of heat around. Medium body and light carbonation.

Bottle sample at a tasting at Daganís place. Thanks Dagan. Murky brown with a tiny bit of bubbly brown foam that disappears immediately. Aroma of coffee, chili, cardamon, cinnamon and more spices. Flavor of coffee, a bit of cocoa, lots of spices and a very hot chili finish. Medium-bodied. Too hot.
