COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
12 Beers of the Apocalypse #4. Peste Chocolate Chili Ale will plague you with the rich flavors of cocoa, chilies, and cinnamon in a beer of 7.5% ABV. A blend of Peruvian cocoa, Ceylon cinnamon, and chipotle, guajillo, pasilla, and cayenne peppers make this beer a unique distraction from the approaching end of the world as we know it. Brewed with Pale, Munich, C-77 Crystal, and Chocolate malts with roasted flaked barley, and nominally bittered with Magnum, this is the fourth of our 12 Beers of the Apocolypse heralding the winding down of the Mayan calendar.

Bomber from Malt and Vine. Pours black with a creamy/foamy tan head. Aroma is chili and chocolate. Med body. Flavor is very chili, somewhat chocolate, with a smooth burnt malt backbone. Sort of a chili porter. Doesn’t seem to be much bitter, but the chili substitutes well.

Bottle shared by DrSilverworm. Poured a dark brown color with an average fizzy light brown head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate toasted peppers and cinnamon aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium to heavy toasted hot peppers spice flavor with a medium hot spice finish of moderate duration. Solid complex brew.

Draft… This beer rocks!… Pours pitch black with a small, creamy, khaki head. Excellent retention. The nose is a decadent mélange of milk chocolate, fudge, and deeply roasted malts. Medium-bodied with zippy carbonation. The flavor provides fudge and dark chocolate trailed by chili pepper warmth. Raspy, assertive chili pepper finish. World class effort!

Draft. Very dark maroon, almost flat. Aroma of jalapenos and dark milk chocolate. Taste is very peppery chocolate and coffee. Great aroma, and the peppers don’t overwhelm the taste, but take your antacids first anyway.

On tap at Capone’s. Brown pour with a smaller sized off white head. Roast, chocolate and peppers. Not overly burning finish, but a burning pepper finish none the less that drowned out any other tastes.

Bottle. Pours particulate black with no head; particles are reminiscent of powdered chilis. Aroma is heavy peppers, lightly smoked notes, chocolate, raisins and prune notes fight through the peppers. Flavor is heavy peppers and spice, chocolate, light smoke, dark fruity esters, and a sweet finish with plenty of heat around. Medium body and light carbonation.

GABF. Dark brown pour. Light brown head. Aroma is all chili up front, some green pepper then you get a hint of the roast, chocolate and dark fruit. Flavor is spicy, quite hot. Behind the heat are some fruity and roasty notes with hints of dark chocolate. A lot going on. You don’t want this if you don’t like heat.

Draft at Capone’s. Hazy dark brown pour with tan head. Nose was roasty dark malt, cacao, cinnamon, peppery. Tasted malty, with notes of cacao and spices. Got spicier late, and the finish was spicy from the beginning, but I love hot peppers, and thought this worked for me seemingly better than most. I’d drink this with mexican food any day of the week.

Draft at special brews. Pours a near black with a light creamy tan head. Strange mix of sweet earthy green chile flesh and dark chocolate on the nose. Creamy medium body with livelyish carb. Sweet milk chocolate and pepper heat on the mid palate with a surprisingly sharp pepper finish.
