COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Down, down, down Maelstrom will go, pulling the hapless beer enthusiast in with a beguiling blend of blood orange, Northwest hops and sweet orange peel. Stray to close and you may not escape the currents of this tender trap. Blood orange provides tartness and the blush of a brazen sea, Citra and amarillo hops from the Yakima Valley offer bite and aroma, and orange peel suggests a little something else on the wind. Maelstrom is brewed with pale, Munich and Dextri-pils malts bittered with German Northern Brewer and finished and dry-hopped with Citra and Amarillo.

Tap at Pour House, murky gold orange with light head and good lacing. Notes of tangy, bitter hops, grapefruit, tangerine, orange, light toasted malt. Nice and dry, good beer if you can get past the aggressiveness.

Draft at Stag’s Head. Pours hazy golden yellow with a medium white head. Good lacing. Aroma of sweet oranges, mostly the juice and rind, not the pith, and grassy hops. Taste is lightly hoppy and grassy with a good amount of citrus, mostly grapefruit and orange. Body is very light, almost a little watery. Wish the blood orange was a little more prominent. Bitter finish.

Bottle. Pours a hazy golden orange with a medium white head. Hoppy aroma of pine, citrus, orange and grapefruit. Flavor was bitter with oranges, pine, citrusrind, bitter grapefruit and a hint of caramel. Medium bodied with soft carbonation, semi dry finish.

Draft - Grain, citrus and bitter grapefruit on the nose. Cloudy orange with a huge thick fluffy white head. Taste is sweet with an immediate bitterness and citrus flavour. Rather than the sweetness of the orange I just get the bitterness of the pith. I finally get the blood orange in the finish. Refreshing and bitter, but not really all that tasty.

NikkTwist (1529) - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - OCT 28, 2012
Draft at Khyber Pass. Cloudy orange pour with a big white head that quickly went down to a very thin ring. Astringent citrus flavors. Blood orange pulp, seeds and pith. Citra hop bite as well. Juicy but quite bitter. Somewhat one note, and the body is a bit too thin, but still an interesting brew.

Aroma of oranges, citrussy hops, and caramel. Pours orange with a foamy head. Tastes sweet with a nice citrus hop up front with a bitter mouthfeel and sweet Orange in the backround. Nice sweet IPA.

Pours with a yellow haze. Really yellow, not gold. Interesting to look at. The head was relatively short lived. Lots of wheat, pithy orange and an underlying grassy sweetness.
