4.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 LarryBeast (273) - - JUN 18, 2012
On draft at Elysian Fields. Deep black in the pint with a thick cushion of creamy head on top. Chocolate mocha and roast aromas. Uber smooth with a hint of fruity sweetness to accent the deeper malts and roast flavours. Lush and full-bodied, Guinness-esque. Loved it, wish I didn’t have to travel to Seattle to try it on tap.

Tap at Elysian. I have no idea how this beer rates this low. It is phenomenal. Pours to a pitch black body with a clingy gorgeous tan lacing and coating head. Aroma is very chocolate and burnt black patent. Has that rounded Irish yeast and light citrus hops. Flavor is roasted malt but balanced and much easier drinking than Guinness. Sweet finish on a clean dry body that’s bordering on a light astringency,

Nose is dark and roasty with a hint of burnt malts and lightly tart. Pours dark brown, more or less black with a huge creamy tan head. The flavor is roasty and burnt with a subtle light sweetness and a hint of tartness from the portion of sour mash. Easy drinking yet flavorful. Smooth carbonation. Rather enjoyable IMO.

Guest beer on nitro at the 1221 E. Pike Street brewery in Seattle, Washington. Pours an opaque dark brown brew with a creamy off-white head that has some excellent retention and lacing from the nitro charge. Aroma of toasted dark malt, dark chocolate, a touch of coffee and some dark pitted fruits. Taste is smooth and semi-sweet with flavors of toasted dark malts, chocolate and some light coffee. Finish has a mild metallic texture with some smoothness and toasted dark malt aftertaste.

Draft @ Elysian Fields. Black thick beige head. Cola and cream soda aroma but not in a bad way. Soft silky nitro. Almost no roast. The sour mash adds character and very pintable. The most Irish Irish stout outside Ireland. Excellent rendition.

On tap, nitro, at Khyber Pass. I liked this. Fairly mild overall but easy to drink. Black with big tan head minimal nose. Creamy mouth feel. Roast was minimal but hint of a sour/tart bite. Smooth and light.

I liked this one more than most other raters--I thought it had a more complex taste than others are giving it credit for. the aroma was smoked, peppery, vanilla, bourbon and coffee, with the same tastes along with a slight bitter grassy taste. Perhaps it was just different, after 15 tastes, but I thought it an enjoyable stout.

On tap. Black with big nitro head. Good roast with some chocolate and coffee. Smooth and creamy...enjoyable on this damn cold day. Not that boldest stout in the world, nor should it be.
