Commercial Description:
A smooth and sturdy stout, made with 10% rolled oats, roasted barley and chocolate malt. The name is referential to the founders of Thebes, warriors who sprang from the earth when the teeth of a slain dragon were sown by Cadmus. Bittered with Chinook; finished with Cascade and Columbus hops.

Bottle. Pours a dark brown color, with a thin wet head and lots of lacing. Roasted chocolate hits first in the aroma, and the maltiness is hard and up front. Flavor has tons of roasted chocolate, some berries, and has an overall sharp, spicy feel. Light bodied, and a good example of a foreign stout. Quite enjoyable.

From Skyview. A thick and heavy beer. Almost no carbonation. Loads of malt which, combined with moderate hops, makes this bitter. Just a little chocolate in there

4-5-08 bottle shared at tasting
Dark brown black pour with decent head that fades quickly and has some spotted lacing. Sweet raisin maple malt smell. Flavor is sweet and malt and some coffee. Palate is decent - nothing too amazing but fitting with the flavor.

Tasted at the April Northern California Beer Tasting. This foreign stout pours a deep black color from a 22oz bottle. Small to medium sized tan head. Aroma is chocolate and coffee with some wood. A medium bodied stout. The malts are chocolate and burnt malts. The hops are earthy. There is a fairly pronounced ashiness to this beer, which sort of detracts from the other flavors. Nice balance. Good carbonation. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is crisp and clean. Aftertaste is slightly bitter and a touch of ash.

Thanks to Skyview for sharing. Black color with a thin head. Roasted malt aroma and taste, with more dark malt and a slight bitterness to the finish. A little sweetness is trying to poke out. Solid.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle; oily dark chocolate, rim of tanned cream, appearing thick and rich. Interplay of spritzy and syrupy on the nose; melted chocolate, brownie, caramel, and alcohol made brisk by a cool, surface clinging peppermint, anise and pear presence. Oak tart flavor. Apple, red licorice, spicy bite; some meatiness and toasty roast. Ashy tobacco touch. Burnt caramel. Toasty, warm palate; generous and silky, and made up of a soft, full chocolate and blanketing pillowy yeast texture. Notably easy. Dried red fruits and some lasting acidity finishes; good complex malts and some unique qualities throughout. Thanks for sharing, Bob!

Appearance: Pours a dark brown, near black body with a tiny, wispy, khaki-colored head. Smell: Aroma full of dark, roasty malts yielding notes of chocolate, dark caramel, anise, and even a quick whiff of oatmeal. Taste: Semi-sweet chocolate and dark malts that are a touch roasty providing a hint of coffee. Modestly sweet taste of thick dark caramel. There’s only ever a slight bitterness. Tastes of of vanilla and anise emerge on the relatively sweet finish. Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation. Smooth mouthfeel. Drinkability: A fine, tasty stout from Elysian.

Bottle. Dark, milk chocolate head. Coffee, charcoal, liquorice. Full mouth feel, dry forest fire finish. Lovely for sipping, would probably be nice with smoked meat. This could certainly warrant a broader distribution.
