AmEricanbrew (1752), Louisiana, USA Jan 9, 2008 Updated: Mar 6, 200822 oz. bottle pours an opaque black liquid with a light brown head. Has a malty sweet , chocolate aroma with a whiff of alcohol. Medium bodied and very smooth. Has a blackened malt taste with a nicely bitter triple-shot mocha/alcohol finish. The flavors here are bold and straight forward, no surprizes. Whether on tap or in a fresh or aged bottle, this stout never disappoints. A regular in my fridg along side its stout cousin Obsidian.
eaglefan538 (2355), Wilmington, Delaware, USA Jan 7, 2008 Bottle from 5000/Larry Pitonka. The pour was pitch black, nice choco-colored head, great retention, very nice lacing. The aroma was wonderful, lactic chocolate notes along with some roasty coffee. The flavor followed the aroma, very well crafted and balanced, the only consolation in watching OSU get man-handled by LSU tonite. Milky chocolate, cocoa, and coffee blends that went together very nicely, semi-sweet finish, but not sweet. Mouthfeel was full, short of sticky, nicely supported by the malts and carbonation both. Thanks, Andre, great stuff! TheEpeeist (1430), Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, USA Dec 30, 2007 22 oz bottle. Ebony with a tan wash and edging. Mostly coffee nose, some chocolate. Taste is dark roast and bittersweet with lime peel tang. Oily finish with hints of dates and licorice. joss (3634), Garching b. München, Germany Dec 14, 2007 Bottle. Sugar, caramel and burned aroma. Fairly black, creamy brown head. Smooth chocolate entry, Dark sugar, granola, hops hide in the background. Dry finish, coffee and caramel aftertaste, a hint cinnamon retrnasal.
Creamy texture, very lightly carbonated.
Nice. robforbes (1083), Bremerton, Washington, USA Dec 9, 2007 pour is jet black with a small brown head, excellent lacing.
smell is complex, nuts roasting on a fire, bitter-sweet cocoa, a touch of coffee, brown sugar, oatmeal, malt, vanilla hiding in the background.
taste is smooth and creamy, milk chocolate, coffee mocha, toasted walnuts, graham crackers, roasted malts, finish is bitter and slightly dry.
overall a great beer, hits all the senses just right, i would recommend this to all and would definitely have again. jrob21 (1252), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Dec 5, 2007 Nothing incredibly unique about this one but a good experience nonetheless. All types of caramel, roasted, and chocolate malt action here. In the aroma, flavor, oozing out of the glass. Nice creamy and smooth texture makes this one a pleasant drink. YourDarkLord (1800), Urbana, Illinois, USA Nov 27, 2007 Beer as it should be. Pitch black with a thick, creamy tan head. Aroma of coffee, semi-sweet chocolate, caramel, anise, molasses. Rich and robust in the mouth, full bodied. The flavor reiterated the aroma in a nice blend of sweetness and bitterness. Seems stronger than the 7.4% ABV noted. Great stout.
aracauna (2357), Georgia, USA Nov 26, 2007 Black, dark brown around the edges. Rich, lightly sweet mocha. Finishes off with a plum fruitiness. I really liked this one. I was surprised by it, actually.
