jhumphries69 (717), Tyrone, Georgia, USA Aug 23, 2007 Pours opaque and dark black with a medium-sized, dark tan head that subsides somewhat to a thin, tan layer of tight bubbles that lace the glass only somewhat. The aroma is lovely: a huge combo of thick, vinous malts, dark fruit, hints of rich, dark chocolate, and a touch of fruity, citrusy hops. The flavor starts malty and sweet with a touch of chocolate-covered fruit and hops. The middle of the tongue picks up notes of rich espresso and dark chocolate along with pungent, green hops. The finish is full in body and extra-full in flavor: roasted grains, very bitter hops, raisins, prunes, molasses, vanilla, and chocolate. The mouthful is quite creamy and smooth. It is full in body with hints of oiliness combined with a touch of acidic, carbon dioxide bite (which builds to a peak around the middle of the tongue). Overall, this knocked me out - a great brew - quite a find. jake65 (1657), Williston, North Dakota, USA Aug 20, 2007 Bottle: Pours black with a medium sized creamy tan head. Sort of a honey comb type lacing. Nose is mild of roasted malt and mocha. Tastes rich with roast and bittersweet and dark chocolate. Some additional bitters too. Silky smooth, this is a refreshingly easy to sip on and really released the flavors well as the glass warmed. illinismitty (1790), Nashville, Tennessee, USA Aug 19, 2007 Draft at Elysian Fields in Seattle. Pours black with a creamy retentive beige head. Dry dark roasted malt and coffee aroma. Flavor of black patent malts, coffee, bitter dark chocolate with some moderate hop bitterness and wood mid palate. Little sweetness in this beer. Finish is dry and slightly acidic. Enjoyable. mgermani (862), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Aug 7, 2007 Pours a pitch black with a lovely thick tan head with nice lacing. Sweet, molasses nose with light notes of chocolate & alcohol. Slightly tart body - raspberries & cream. Wonderfully roasty flavour, delightfully present hops, and a well-balanced flavour. Full and creamy body, decent subtle carb. What a surprise - many thanks to my friend Dave for the bottle! RollinHard (748), Fort Worth, Texas, USA Aug 7, 2007 Pours a black with a medium brownish head. Nice strong aroma of cocoa and chocolate at first. Acidic qualities of raspberries and coffee follow, with hints of licorice and vodka. Not many regular stouts can be smelled 8 inches or so from the glass, but this can. Very smooth flavors of dark chocolate, smokey wood, coffee, caramel, earth....Finishes butterscotchy and dirty, plenty of hop flavor, and the roast element is a nice team player. Aftertaste is the same, but any hop bitterness is mild. It’s there, but not meant to stick out. Wonderful creamy texture and the body is full, but it feels easy going enough at the same time. Though it’s not terribly different from a lot of other stouts, it’s very well done and totally satisfying. pantani (1894), Salinas, California, USA Aug 4, 2007 Black with a thin tan head. Aroma is heavy coffee, oatmeal, chocolate, and caramel. Taste is fairly smokey, with chocolate, light coffee, faint hops in the background. Very good stuff. Body is excellent. dwyerpg (2519), Las Vegas, Nevada, USA Aug 1, 2007 Some chocolate in the aroma. Flavor is very much of chocolate and thick, bittersweet but tasty. Quite good stuff.
