KingpinIPA (842), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA May 21, 2007 Thanks to LarryP. Dark color. Smell of roasted coffee beans, hops, chocolate, vanilla, bread, hints of dark fruit and a touch of smoke. Taste of hops, roasted coffee, chocolate cake, caramel, slight berry, bread, vanilla beans and minor alcohol at the very end. Very rich and smooth. Great stout! Viper666 (614), Greenfield Park, Quebec, Canada May 16, 2007 Bouteille, courtoisie de Hogtownharry. Beer is opaque dark brown, head is average-sized, tan, frothy, diminishing but lasting. Dots of specky lace on snifter.

The aroma is nice. First impression is roasty-creamy with an earthy appeal. Malty with moderate notes of roasted grain, creamy milk chocolate, coffee, light note of peaty molasses; Hoppy with light-to-moderate notes of resin/pine; Yeasty with a light note of creamy dough, light note of basement; Light miscellaneous notes of sweet black cherry, light note of distant fireplace smoke, trace of rainy garden soil.

The flavor is moderately sweet, light-to-moderately bitter with a long, , lightly bitter, light-to-moderately sweet finish. Hint of astringency.

The body is medium-to-full, the texture is velvety and the carbonation is lively. Ernest (4481), Boulder, Colorado, USA May 12, 2007 Bottle. Head is initially small, frothy, light brown, mostly lasting. Body is black. Aroma is moderately malty (chocolate milk, caramel, roasted grain, cocoa powder), lightly hoppy (flowers, apricot, grapefruit), with light notes of cassis and peat. Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Medium to full body, creamy texture, soft/lively carbonation, lightly alcoholic. I personally see this as a straight sweet stout, not a foreign stout, but what the hell do I know? In fact it smells like a milk stout...strong lactose sugar smell to my nose. But either way it’s extremely nice, and much better than expected (based mainly on the ho-hum triple and saison I’ve had from this brewery). Sweet, caramelly-chocolatey nose, with some fruitiness and earthy character as well. Sweet but balanced in the mouth with an exceptionally rich and creamy mouthfeel. Thumbs up, very delightful to the last sip. waolsen (1220), Littleton, Colorado, USA May 6, 2007 bottle. midnight black with thin frothy tan head. mild fresh aroma. very hoppy, mild chocolate and coffee grinds. big coffee grinds. very bitter. mellow chocolate, slightly acidic. at times reminds me of warming up coffee after it cools. its just a bit off. none the less this is a very nice coffee stout. billk (300), Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, USA Apr 26, 2007 Tap @ the porch. Plenty of spicey aroma with a touch of soy sauce. Flavor is spicey, roasty but with a trace of burnt rubber. Sweetness wasn’t overdone. Not bad but lacks depth & richness. Well into medium bodied, plenty of hop flavor and bitterness. kmweaver (2396), Sebastopol, California, USA Apr 23, 2007 22oz bottle. Pours a very dark, cola brown; fluffy light tan head with fine-bubbled lacing. Light, roasted malt and vanilla in the aroma. Medium-to-full, chewy mouthfeel: plenty of milk chocolate, strong roasted / charred malt character; hints of a lactic tartness (very light); drinkable and layered. Medium, bitter chocolate and roasted malt finish. BrewDad (2363), Olympia, Washington, USA Apr 1, 2007 Taster at Tangle Town Brew Pub
A deep deep black color with a light brown head. The beer was thick and sticks to your ribs. Was full of malty aroma, flavor and was sweet and tasty. The slight bitter finish with the 36 IBU’s was also very interesting. This was a very solid and good Stout.
