A smooth and sturdy stout, made with 10% rolled oats, roasted barley and chocolate malt. The name is referential to the founders of Thebes, warriors who sprang from the earth when the teeth of a slain dragon were sown by Cadmus. Bittered with Chinook; finished with Cascade and Columbus hops.

Previously 7.5%.

Rating #1447 - 21.01.2015 - Bottle from Co-op MacTaggart. Pours an opaque black, barelythere tan cap that bubbles away quickly. Aroma is very much cocoa, vanilla, a teensy bit roasty and earthy. Taste is a hint of coffee, chocolate and the roasted grain. Thick, frothy, but still quite rich in flavour. Mild creamy texture. Decent oatmeal stout, not sure why this classes in with Foreign Extra Stouts though.

Pours a nearly jet black color with a short lived brown head. Has the aroma of milk chocolate, with sweet oats, and strong notes of coffee. the flavor is of sweet milk chocolate with strong coffee notes to it. Goes down smooth with a bitter coffee aftertaste. Overall a nice foreign stout.

Black pour with slight off white head. Aroma of roasted malt, molasses, slight smoke, coffee, dark chocolate. Nice rich, sweet flavors balanced by herbal hops and dry roasted grain. Medium body, oily texture, soft carb., bitter finish. Overall very good, would repeat.

Refrigerated brown bomber poured into a glass. Black with medium light brown head. Aroma is dry toasty dark malt, medium body, medium carbonation, and little small-bubble lacing. Taste is roast dark malt, espresso, coffee, pine hops, and dry finish. Not my thing.

650ml bottle. Pours an opaque black with a large, long lasting, brown head that laces. Roasted malt aroma with dark chocolate, coffee and vanilla. Sweet flavour of roasted malt, dark chocolate, coffee, vanilla and a slight burnt note with hints of hops in a dry, bitter finish. Medium to full body with a smooth, creamy, oily texture and soft carbonation. Excellent. A world class Foreign Stout.

Pours pitch black and completely opaque with a half finger beige head that quickly settles into a lasting ring. Sporadic streaks of spotty lacing left behind. Slightly smokey roasted malt aroma with a decent amount of sweetness for balance. Pretty robust with hints of coffee bean, burnt toast, oatmeal and dark chocolate countered by caramel, toffee and rich fudge-y bakers chocolate. Thereís definitely a a sweet dessert like quality that counters the heavier elements. Full bodied with a deeply roasted, robust dark malt flavor thatís countered by lighter malt sweetness and faint earthy hop bitterness. Pretty dry and almost burnt tasting up front without becoming acrid or overwhelming. Hints of burnt toast, roasted gourmet coffee, dark chocolate and of course oatmeal followed by toffee, chocolate cake and resinous hops. Lots of dry bitterness yet this big beer remains well balanced and pretty easy to drink considering itís complexity.

Draft while in Seattle. Black pour, thin but persistent dark beige head. Sweet stout, coffee, dark chocolate, roasted malt, usual suspects. Taste is heavier on the roast. Nice smooth heavy body. dry roasted bitter finish.

This shit is awful. First, it looks like poo water. Then you add in some old coffee flavor in addition to none of the good components (like a nice head) I look for in a stout and Iím done.
