Commercial Description:
A smooth and sturdy stout, made with 10% rolled oats, roasted barley and chocolate malt. The name is referential to the founders of Thebes, warriors who sprang from the earth when the teeth of a slain dragon were sown by Cadmus. Bittered with Chinook; finished with Cascade and Columbus hops.

Bottle. Black body, creamy chocolate head. Muted roast, very muted dark chocolate in aroma. Very dry bitter roast flavour with mild malt in the middle is a bit one dimensional. Average to medium palate. Solid, but lacks transendence. Thanks Larry Pitonka.

22oz pours black in color with a nice chocolate milk shake like head that’s rather tall and lasts for a while before it leaves a spider web lacing. As it warms up a lot of alcohol and coffee seem to come out of the aroma. A sweet roasted flavor dominates the palate with chocolate, coffee, molasses and alcohol. Other than the weird cartoonlike artwork of the label, its an enjoyable stout.

Dark brown color, nice tan head that had a good hang time then faded slowly to leave a bit of a lace behind. The aroma was malty and roasty with a nice sweet side and maybe some hints of a bitter chocolate. The flavor was much better then i was expecting.Roasty and malty with a nice sweetness and some hints of chocolate and coffee,as the brew warms up a bit the coffee and chocolate become a little more pronounced but over all i’d have to say i really like this brew and want more for later.

Pouring a deep brown, nearly black body with a creamy brown head, this ale has an aroma of roasted malt, freshly ground coffee, molasses, bittersweet chocolate, and alcohol. The latter, also noticeable in the flavor, is something of a surprize considering it’s (relatively) not that strong. It tastes of sweet, lightly roasted malts whith chocolate, coffee, and the afore mentioned alcohol. Nicely blended with a moderately dry finish.

22 oz bottle. Dark brown to light black body with a good latte brown head. Aroma has some alcohol mixed with a sweet coffee/molasses smell. Very nice flavor highlighted by coffee and a malty sweetness. Palate is thick enough but not syrupy. Very nice stout.

22 oz. bottle. Very good stout. Not too sweet taste with a well balanced body. Nice hops addition. Alcohol hides well. Very smooth.

Bottle. Pours a dark black color with a creamy tan head on top. Aroma is full of coffee, espresso, chocolate, and roast. Flavor is primarily chocolate and coffee. However the coffee is not dominant enough to taste more than the chocolate. Very balanced stout between the malts and hops. Not overly bitter nor sweet. A very enjoyable stout.

Heavy, dark black with a creamy, espresso colored head. The aroma is thick and robust, full of creamy cocoa, sweet caramel and brown sugar, toasted nuts and whole grain bread, a hint of oily oats and a crisp, piney bitterness. The body is full and robust but not sticky or annoying in the mouth. The flavor is nicely balanced between the sweet, chocolately malt and bitter, piney hops. The alcohol is virtually indistinguishable, but does proffer a small licorice element to the overall profile. This is one tasty stout, and at under $4 a bottle, this could be a regular in my near future. Another winner from Elysian.
