Commercial Description:
A smooth and sturdy stout, made with 10% rolled oats, roasted barley and chocolate malt. The name is referential to the founders of Thebes, warriors who sprang from the earth when the teeth of a slain dragon were sown by Cadmus. Bittered with Chinook; finished with Cascade and Columbus hops.

Its appearance is of used motor oil black - with nary a tone of brown to be towed in slack. A thick medium sized foam sits atop, and man it just doesn’t stop, compact and chocolate hued - wow, its a quite a sight to be viewed. The lacing cakes itself in frosty sheeting - it stays ever present and never fleeting. Aroma is roasty and burnt with a fairly strong coffee presense - yet underneath lies bitter dark chocolate which carries its own essence. It stays strong with cold pressed coffee - when its the roast and bitter chocolate that take the trophy. Taste is just as roasty with a flat pace of choc-O-lat - building up as it goes and plenty of that its definately got. A gradual increase of molasses tang hides behind it - as its coffee presense tends to find it. It finishes well rounded and extended - all the while maintaining what’s intended. With bittered dark chocolate tones competing - the coffee creates roughly textured points of seating. Quite complexing as it gets warm - man this stuff just ain’t the norm. Feel is bold and rich, quite smooth and succulant - that goes with its character, wondering now where it went. Drys out late with chocolate earth - yet the coffee still gives lots of birth. It really is quite a treat, but watch out - it may knock you off your feet.

Dark, black body with tan lacing head. Butter popcorn, chocolate, coffee aroma. Flavor is coffee, chocolate. Smooth palate. Good if you can look past the butter aroma.

Draught Fully jet-black with a brown-yellow head. Licorice, coffee, espresso, some toffee and coffee sweets. Bitter initial taste, rapidly overcome by a sweet coffee-and-milk flavour. Well bodied, slick, nearly cloying. Lots of restsugars, even in the aftertaste. Very sweet; the Dragon has a sweet tooth, is it?

I was in Seattle last week and had the opportunity to try this beer. I found it to be very agressive with chocolate tones with a hoppy middle and a clean finish. This stout is not for the weak hearted!

Pours an almost impenetrable black with only slight reddish highlights comming through, topped with a thick brown head. Mocha, coffee, chocolate and hop aromas abound. The taste is chocolate, P.N.W. hops, coffee, quite sweet as well. Beautiful lacing. A tasty impy stout

Poured black with a small dark brown head. Aroma was huge coffee with some notes of milk chocolate. Flavors were coffee, milk chocolate, and some roast. All the flavors were a bit too light, but still very good. Creamy mouthfeel.

Strong rich aroma, that is reminscent of coffee cake. Lots of chocolate, sweet melted cream and butter, with rich toffee and caramel. Tasty if you are looking for a sweeter stout, that has some depth.

Thanks to fatty. Pours a dark brown with an average tan head. Aroma was buttered toffee, chocolate. Flavor of chocolate, coffee and some more of the butter.
