Commercial Description:
A smooth and sturdy stout, made with 10% rolled oats, roasted barley and chocolate malt. The name is referential to the founders of Thebes, warriors who sprang from the earth when the teeth of a slain dragon were sown by Cadmus. Bittered with Chinook; finished with Cascade and Columbus hops.

So readily available that I have passed on purchasing for rating purposes for years now - wife is making a Beef Stew that called for Guinness but I insisted we use one of these in place. Great malt complexity in a silky smooth body. Light sweetness with moderate roasted character. All forms of the fermentables are displayed very well; the chocolate and oat add the gravitas to make this drink shine. Great use of light bittering hops that leave a small spice note on the finish that is immediately subdued by the oat malt essence. Medium roast coffee and some oak. A Leviathan of a drink.

This dark brown opaque beer poured with a picture perfect light brown head. There is a roasted malt aroma and a rich chocolate and coffee flavor. The addition of oats causes this brew to be smooth and mellow.

super dark, increased oat flavor as beer warms up, slight coffee taste and textures, runs smooth throughout the mouth and down the throat to my belly

courtesy of tpd675. Pours black with a godlen - brownish head, leaving some nice yellow lacing. Aroma of oats and roasted coffee. Taste, roasted malts with light bitter chocolate and coffee. Very smooth with grainy mouthfeel. Finish mocha with a creamy - milk coffee.

Bomber. Sweet malty nose, very roasty with light coffee and (possibly imagined) red berry. Just this great wafting, densely smoke-like nose of roast without ash. Pitch pour with a luscious light brown head, rocky and creamy. Sweet lactose and chocolate, light coffee and medium roast. Light bitterness with faint earthy hop prickling. Watery body is creamy and smooth, sticky lips. Too sweet for quantity, but simple and enjoyable.

Boom! Good beer. Nice chocolate and coffee taste. Barclay (my dog) drank the shit out of this beer. He is very picky you see, and anything he drinks, I must say is a great beer. This beer was very smooth, and very sweet. I think the hop profile was overrated, but the chocolate/coffee flavors, and the nice chocolate brown head, were awesome. This beer is great and underrated.

Bottle shared by decaturstevo. Poured black with a tall tan head that left good lace from a thin lasting layer. Nice aroma of chocolate, coffee and a hopped background. The flavor is hoppy bitter backed with roasted malts and chocolate. Medium body that was sweet up front and bitter in the end.
