Commercial Description:
A smooth and sturdy stout, made with 10% rolled oats, roasted barley and chocolate malt. The name is referential to the founders of Thebes, warriors who sprang from the earth when the teeth of a slain dragon were sown by Cadmus. Bittered with Chinook; finished with Cascade and Columbus hops.

Black with a thin tan head. Aroma is heavy coffee, oatmeal, chocolate, and caramel. Taste is fairly smokey, with chocolate, light coffee, faint hops in the background. Very good stuff. Body is excellent.

22oz bottle from Bottle Barn, no date. Clear deep brown--black in the glass--with a tan 1 finger head, fair retention. Roasted malts, dark chocolate, and light soy up front with some soft oats behind. There is also a little toasted caramel. The flavor has stronger oats, though there is still plenty of roasted malts, salted nuts, chocolate and caramel notes. The finish has bitterness around a 3, and only slightly ashy. Smooth medium-full body with light prickly carbonation. Very good stout.

On tap at the Blind Tiger - NYC. Dark pitch black-brown, with a coffee cream head. Light coffee and roast aroma. Oooh. Great caramel, powdered chocolate and sweet cream. Complex roasty malt profile. Great body. Cream, light, airy. Light fresh chocolate cake. This is a fine foreign stout. Nice clean finish. An excellent, complex version.

Courtesy Ol_Mr_Crow. Pours jet black, with a thick, creamy, well-retained beige head. Smells of chocolate cream, dark malts, and even a bit of smoke in there too. Liked the nose. The flavor has some surprising hoppy characters to it. light roasty malts and chocolate give it some great balance. Definite bitterness in the finish, had some oak and vanilla notes. great palate on this beer. Very tasty and nicely crafted stout.

Black with a creamy head and good lacing. Strong roast and toasted caramel. Nice backing of hops. Smoky aroma with some woody aromas. A nice bitterness rolls out in the flavor along with a plethora of dark malts. Chocolate and roast mainly. Thick on the tongue with a bitter tail.

Nice black pour with almost no head. Smells of chocolate/coffee/malts. Big flavor of bittersweet chocolate and a little smoke.

About a 3/4 inch high head of dense and creamy bubbles. Medium brown in color and lasts for quite a while. Rich chocolaty aroma with some licorice, sweet malts, roasted grains and a bit of coffee. Black like well used motor oil. Silky smooth palate. Lots of licorice again, dark roasted malts and some oat presence. Amazingly easy drinking and has a solid hops presence. Light alcohol presence. Finishes a little on the bitter side with a lingering roastyness. A damn fine stout!
